Weather on the BBC News channel at 20:58hrs, the audio is simply not broadcast quality.
An utter disgrace, WTF does it need to be presented from that balcony ? pointless, should
be in an, err.. proper studio, with fit for purpose acoustics.
I agree that the balcony should be scrapped. I have to say that the in studio screen in C and E that they use during the 1, 5 and 6 works very well and I think it should replace the balcony.
I disagree - handing across the newsroom to the weather is an effective way to show off the facilities. Ok, they have problems with sound quality - which I'm sure they can fix - but that doesn't mean scrapping it!

It's not about showing off facilities - it's about having a quality broadcast
Hmm, I like the balcony too, and whilst it does get a bit loud at times, whenever I see it it's usually fine.
One thing I would like changed though is that BBC Weather logo-sticker thing on the wall - the background to it is a slightly different colour than the actual wall, and it's just a little thing that manages to really bug me.
The presentation is much nicer on the balcony than it was at TVC, and it helps differentiate the NC onscreen from the network bulletins.
But it's worth remembering if they did stop using the balcony for broadcasts, they'd probably switch back to CSO instead. The weather updates offer an important point for set, presenter & guest changes which would be harder to accomplish if the weather presenter was in studio all the time. Just remember how horribly loud the noise disturbances used to be during the BBC News at One & Five at TVC as chairs were re-positioned and personnel entered and left the studio. One of the main reasons they don't seem to have that problem in N/BH is because they go to an ad break after network bulletins, but this wouldn't be a feasible solution for a 24/7 news channel that broadcasts some 14 hours a day from one studio.
That said, they really need to sort the sound out. Sometimes it's perfect, sometimes it's acceptable, sometime's it's considerably distorted. If they can't improve the microphones, is there anything else they reasonably can do to improve the sound without jeopardising the current innovative presentation?

Maybe having mics around the 'set' like round the monitor border, above or below the presenter etc?
Not entirely sure I understand what it is about the balcony which people are so keen on, especially since the presentation is so compromised. I mean, it's just a guy standing in front of a telly, and there's no attempt at dressing it up beyond that. Moreover, apart from that naff "let's cross the newsroom" shot, they're doing everything they can to pretend it's *not* integrated into the NBH atrium - so what's the benefit?
