Shock horror! Martha Kearney left last night (which is odd, as according to the Radio Times she's doing Friday with Kirsty doing Review ). Apparrently she's headed for Radio 4.Sad

PS on second thoughts, it might just have been her last Paxman-fronted programme. She was saying that Jeremy "...won't have me to kick around any more."

Indeed, she's of to WATO... but she is supposed to be sticking around on Review - so maybe Kirsty's doing the main programme, and Martha's doing Review? Michael Crick is rumoured (or possibly confirmed, I forget) to be the new Political Editor.

Confirmed - bbc press released it some time this week

Maybe tonight is her last programme. Will the Review team invite her over and break open some champagne?

FRIDAY 23 MARCH 22:30 GMT - BBC TWO
FROM MARTHA KEARNEY

Hello,

If I say that tonight is my last Newsnight, you could accuse me of doing a Frank Sinatra embarking on yet another farewell tour. After all, didn't Jeremy say goodbye to me on Wednesday night? Ah, but that was my last 2 way, that ritual humiliation when JP tries to trip me up every step of the way.

Tonight any slips are all my own efforts as it's the last time I will be presenting Newsnight - except Newsnight Review of course. It has been a week of farewells as I said goodbye to Woman's Hour on Monday as well. I am still recovering from the rendition of a Dusty Springfield song which the producers concocted.

IRAN

On to more serious matters. We plan to lead tonight on the 15 Royal Navy personnel who've been seized by Iranian forces. The incident comes as the UN Security Council is due to vote tomorrow on a resolution to impose new sanctions on Iran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.

BOB WOOLMER

What are the latest theories surrounding the murder of Bob Woolmer whose death has shocked the cricketing world and beyond? We examine whether there could be links with allegations of match fixing in the game.

WHAT HAS EUROPE DONE FOR US?

And this weekend is the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. So what has Europe ever done for us?

Two campaigners on European issues go head to head in debate. One thinks the whole venture has been a massive mistake from its beginnings in 1957. The other believes Britain should be part of a completely federal Europe and that the nation state is outdated. Let us know your views and be part of the debate.

Martha

I wonder who will be replacing Martha as Jeremy's favourite stud-muffin?

i must say im loving the newsnight look at the moemnt, the whole mise-en-scene of the show is wonderfull. the set and graphiocs compliment it so well and there have been some lovely closing shots of the programme! i wasnt one for the new screen sets at the bbc but newsnight have pulled it off and have shown how you can still make it look different to all the other bbc news sets.

I quite agree - the background in particular is very nice and it would be lovely if there was some subtle, slow animation. However, IMO the mirror titles need a little revision, mainly the removal of Trebuchet.

ITV are also launching a programme called Newsnight (or NewsKnight, to be more precise).

It is listed as a satirical type bulletin, presented by a rather well-known Knight. None other than SIR Trevor McDonald.

I have to say, it's the worst idea I ever heard.............how is Sir Trev gonna carry satire on a weekly basis??????

Well, 'Tonight' is a bit of a joke...

Great Newsnight last night, with Paxman handling the interview and item on "Guido Fawkes" very well and with his trademark questioning. He's slated for tonight too.

Is there a reason there wasn't a proper closing sequence last night? Instead of credits and the theme tune after Kirsty said goodnight it just faded to an animated Newsnight caption. Perhaps they were overrunning, and the controller just couldn't stand losing so many trailers in one junction? Rolling Eyes

What threatened to be another Michael Howard "Did you threaten to overrule him?" last night - Paxo had to ask George Osborne if he was going to reinstate the old pensions systems 5 times and he managed to get an answer: "no". Of course Osborne blamed it on Gordon.

At least it shows George Osborne will actually answer these questions in less than twelve times of asking.
