Well I had a little look and couldn't find a thread with Newsnight content so I've set this up.

It was good to see Jeremy back last night, he does have that "gravitas" feeling to him.
Liked the way the studios remained altered from the election with a soft area and the presenter using the news "wall".
Oh and nice to Newsnight Review from Cannes last week, nothing beats a good rant about films on a Friday

What replaced Newsnight on strike day?

Was there still a Newsnight Scotland?

Indeed, the set was looking rather tired prior to the election, but the sofa, and standing-combo really works, and makes the set feel fresh again.

Would it not be possible to light the purple parts of that set red? If so that would make a great Breakfast set. Put the red sofas in, and get a N24/national style desk, and hey presto, a new set, that doesn't need to be dismantled each night for the next morning, just change a couple of bits of furnature.

I think that would be an excellent idea. There was that new news desk used for the election coverage, maybe move that to the studio and light the studio red for breakfast, Oh and what ever happened to THAT plantpot that used to be behind the presenters, I'd bring that back.

Has anyone else noticed that the old Newsnight desk, with the silver rim has been replaced, by what looks like an MDF copy...

You know its a pitty they don't! It would work really well and Moira could have the desk..... Or her own half of the sofa.....

And would it really be that impossible to change the lights and a desk, I mean look at what has to happen at the moment.

My head nods....I think it really would help the programme to have a serious section, like the desk with serious interviews and all that but then moved over the soft set for interviews (light stuff, My new book etc)
like they used to when Bowen and Raworth presented.

Exactly - you knew where you were with the original set, desk for news and serious stuff, sofa for a more relaxed take on the news, and fluffy stuff.

Did the editor of Breakfast News not say that 'viewers were never sure when news ended and features began' - that is the problem now because of the one presenting area, they have hard news(the little that they have these days) with the light stuff coming from the same area.

Having different areas helped it seem more fast-paced, now it's just a place to sell the careerist Kaplinsky looking for work.

Umm very true, In more ways than one. Did you ever hear of the Kaplisky discussion board at the BBC? It was shut down within an hour because of "offensive" comments...
The set does need changing and the move to news 24's studio doesn't happen for a while yet, so I think it would be an excellent replacement.

There's a nice peice on "Fonics" tonight on Newsnight, forget who's presenting it though.

Timewatch - it got 100,000 more viewers than Newsnight normally gets.

No, i never heard of that, intersting, probably because the board had very true words to say about her.

Anyway, back to Newsnight, and supposing Martha gets either editor, or chief political correspondent, who should replace her?

Garry Gibbon seems to be a top contender.

A thing that annoys me about it, is that why there is a Newsnight political editor - to me it seems as if Newsnight has nothing to do with the rest of BBC News, why don't they just have a chief political correspondent? Seems a bit odd to me, since IIRC Andy has appeared on Newsnight, and he is political editor, but so is Martha Kearny?

Maybe that's just me Smile
