Hosted by Clive Anderson and illustrated with an assortment of new and classic bloopers, The Funny Side of the News demonstrates the many ways in which news cock-ups happen, and tracks how the style of news presentation has evolved over half a century.
News is a serious, difficult and complicated business. Which is why things go wrong on TV news programmes. And when the inevitable mistakes happen, the sober, serious, professional newsreaders are left desperately clinging to the wreckage of their authority and dignity. Which makes their cock-ups funnier still.
Tracing the rise of the personality newscaster, the show reveals the industry feud that's developed over who was first to utter the phrase 'and finally...' at the end of a bulletin, gives a graphic illustration of the dire consequences of involving comedians in news programmes, provides an insight into the sorts of gifts viewers lavish on their favourite newsreaders, suggests that Newsround might actually be responsible for most of the innovations in modern news coverage, and reveals just why so many news presenters have followed in the footsteps of Angela Rippon and danced on TV for the nation's delight.
Packed with gaffes, out-takes and blunders we also get to hear the newsreader's perspective in interviews with Michael Aspel, Fiona Bruce, Anne Diamond, Kenneth Kendall, Jan Leeming, Dermot Murnaghan, Sir David Nicholas, Nick Owen, Nicholas Owen, Jan Ravens, Angela Rippon, Peter Sissons, Pamela Stephenson-Connolly, Jeremy Vine, Kirsty Wark and Kirsty Young. Some strong language.
