The death of the whale has caused more upset in our household than the likes of the death of George Best and the Pope!
Having said that though, while I do think the public interest in the story means it warrants being the main headline and extended coverage - running the story continuously without interuption or other news seems a bit much.

Never quite sure whether this story was quite as important as Sky made it (blanket coverage). The BBC changed their emphasis but always pitched it just right.
But the latter coverage form both services from around the Thames barrier area as the light was dying were horribly poignant - so lonely. Good use of the ariel cameras.

Maybe, just maybe, it will wake people up to what we're doing to the world. It would be nice if the media now focused on the danger humans are to whales, and the environment, in general.
:-(
But surely this particular whale was unaffected by man, indeed without man it would have stood even less of a chance of getting back out of the Thames again.
This is just a silly story that'll be forgotten in a week. Bit of an indictment of the media when news of the Iraqi election results are shoved to one side to make way for a frivolous story of an animal getting lost.

This Whale story to me was all a bit OTT.
A couple of weeks ago there were tonnes of whales washed ashore here on a coast in NZ, and they were twice the size... that was lucky to get a story on BBC World. But that was all Internationally. I think the coverage ive seen over here on the story was a bit over board, and im sure a few Maori's have something to say about it.

Ive just watch NBC Nightly News clips from Friday, and last night, they showed some of Sky News coverage and the opening of Channel 4 News.
I thought that NBC use ITV News?

Will there be calls for a minutes silence by all fishermen next weekend?
Or maybe all fish and chip shops and fish restaurants will see people wearing black armbands.
Well at least it will be in keeping with the OTT coverage by the broadcasters.
If it had been in any other river - indeed when it has been in a Scottish rover - there has never been anything like this coverage.
But of course there is one key word to guarantee wall to wall coverage - London!

Does anyone else keep glancing through the thread titles on The Newsroom and keep thinking this one is called
"James Whale Dies"
Hmmm.....maybe it's just me. I'll get my coat.

I did that yesterday. It's probably because the "W" is inappropriately capitalised, and "James" and "Thames" have more than a few common letters.
