By the Houses of Parliament sounds more dramatic!!!

No, seriously, from the location of where the Whale is, the Houses of Parliament are not that far away. The Whale is somewhere between Pimlico/Battersey, and Milbank.

Yes it is dramatic..It appears to still be closer to battersea though from what i can see on Sky- its not been under any bridges. But its hard to tell though from the skycopter stuff..

Edit- switched to news24 and it is still in battersea..the beeb even have a reporter on one of the boats following the whale..

Well Sky were fishing for viewers on SKY ONE.

Twice during Buffy at 2.30pm and again at about 2.45pm they put up a banner saying "Whales in Thames Coverage on Sky News " for about 30 seconds each time

Yes, there is a whale down the Thames. My point of discussion, is whether it is getting too much coverage by the news channels.

It might just be me, but I think that's reason for good indepth discussion, about what sort of events should get greater coverage by the news channels, and whether this particular event in example, is proof of an unbalance. For instance, more focus on the victory for Iraqi Shias in their elections?

If Robert you believe this is not one of the multi-purposes of this forum, I'm more than confident the vast majority of members may somewhat disagree with you. I've posted on this forum long enough to know what I can and cannot post.

To be honest I think it's a stupid story that's barely newsworthy.

But I agree with threads like this- as I stated in another thread- this forum should be about news events, comment and presentation (analagous to the TV home forum for non-news programming).

Moderation is not required- if nobody wishes to discuss the matter, the subject will slip down the forum and be ignored.

Survival of the fittest. A bit like the whale.

"The newsroom" needs an end to ridiculous moderation in the pathetic search for "thread tidiness" or it really will sink like the whale.

Wonder if Sky will use this for there new "Breaking News" radio adverts? Sky sent out a breaking news txt alert and it had on the end "Live coverage now on Sky News" something they rarley put at the end.

I can't believe that Sky are running this story to the exclusion of almost everything else. Have they gone for a break all afternoon? Is this really what brings in viewers?

Meanwhile, Transport for London's travel news has the following alert:
Quote:
ALL RIVER SERVICES: Due to a whale in the Thames services may be subject to delays.
Commuters really do get every excuse in the book, don't they?

hehe thats one of the better reasons..i like the way TFL make it sound such an ordinary event though.

I've not seen a break on Sky or even a full top of the hour/headlines. At four they just said something along the lines of.. "The whales our top story this afternoon"

Look! There's one!
JT kicked off Live at Five with something resembling a headline sequence (all whale-related), but hasn't been on screen for more than a few minutes.

Maybe they'll see a little more sense at six?

I don't mind the fact that this story is in the news - it is of course a rare and interesting event. However, I didn't think the BBC Six o' clock news coverage was suitable. The story should have been at least third and not have had such a serious tone to it - fair enough it looks like the whale will not survive this ordeal - for many the fact that a whale actually swam up the Thames is the main point of interest.

It is an interesting friday afternoon story..somehow it seems the typical day for this sort fo thing...

Exactly. It's an unusual event , people are interested, it's right on the doorstep of the 2 big news organisations. Why shouldn't they cover it, Sky gave it blanket coverage today, but everyone there is probably very happy to be broadcasting something a bit diffrent to the usual fair of death, destruction and people argueing
