I was going to use the PM system but I'd be quite happy to let other people know my feelings.

Yes, there is a whale down the Thames. My point of discussion, is whether it is getting too much coverage by the news channels.

It might just be me, but I think that's reason for good indepth discussion, about what sort of events should get greater coverage by the news channels, and whether this particular event in example, is proof of an unbalance. For instance, more focus on the victory for Iraqi Shias in their elections?

If Robert you believe this is not one of the multi-purposes of this forum, I'm more than confident the vast majority of members may somewhat disagree with you. I've posted on this forum long enough to know what I can and cannot post.

It's a very rare event. In fact, it's understood to be the first time a whale of this species has been reported in the Thames. It's drawn crowds, and brought traffic to a standstill. An unusual event in a capital city is always going to get coverage.

It does seem OTT to close a thread about an ongoing news event like this - especially when it involves helicopters etc and the more technical aspects of newsgathering that often get discussed here.

Really I think the mods' time would be better spent dealing with the trolls and morons than closing intelligent threads about aspects of news coverage.

I think that the news channels are handling this very well, especially Sky News.

They have obviously scrambled whatever staff they could find to cover this, especially with Martin Brunt, crime correspondant, down on the banks of the Thames following the Whale.

But as mentioned, this is the first time since records began, that a whale of this type has been seen in the Thames, and that also, a second whale is in the Thames down by Southend.

How about 'Prescott'?

Obviously News 24 are competing with Sky, and although it's not a nice thing to say, people will be drawn to watching this, almost as a form of entertainment.

A compromise could be is to have a little "Whale Watch" box in a corner with live helicopter feed, while showing reports regarding the Iraqi elections and the Mary-Ann Leneghan trial for example.

Its almost like a news channel Reality TV show.

But it is events like this that notch up the old viewing figures for the news channels.

Because it's made of blubber? Laughing

If it had been spotted at Hull, that would definately be a candidate for a name Wink

Sky have had some god emails from people, but they seem to be geting confused about the location of the Whale..its in Battersea, yet the presenters said its just by the houses of parliament..
