There is a technical issue with DTT transmission - The content of more than one stream cannot be identical without mucking up the data stream of the multiplex. I note - for the simulcast - that they have delayed BBC ONE by around 1.5 seconds, If however a static caption was shown - such as a map, photo and a reporting from caption - for more than this time lapse the identical content would appear causing the multiplex coding to go haywire. Having the News24 Tower and Strap on the News24 stream helps avoid this possibility. A simple DOG would't be as effective in adding sufficient difference information.

Interesting - though I'm sure the BBC put an old News 24 dog on during the simulcast of the General Election 2005.
Going back to the actual concept, I support the idea of simulcasting the 10 o'clock bulletin, but I find it very odd News 24 promoting a "10 o'clock news hour" where you start with a bulletin from one studio with a presenter and one set of graphics, and then half-way through, switch to another studio, another presenter and another set of graphics!
What would work really well, but would never happen in actuality, would be to have Huw continuing from the national studio on News 24 from 10.30 with business, sport paper review etc.

well he has been making odd appearances on BBC World over recent weeks. He may be drifting off towards that.

I watched this for the first time today (on News 24) and apart from the graphics during the main bulletin itself I thought it was an excellent hour of programming.
The 10 is normally a good bulletin anyway, throwing up some stories not seen across the BBC during the rest of the day. And in the News Hour it's complimented by a full in-depth sport update, the best business bulletin of the day (by a mile) and a good review of the papers. I thought the business coverage was particularly excellent, bearing in mind that business has been sadly lacking from News 24 until now.
An excellent idea executed surprisingly well in my opinion, and 10pm is the perfect time for it. It'll certainly be regular viewing for me.

As an afterthought, how do they handle the standard overnight simulcast of News 24 on BBC1?

Watching the second half of the News Hour last night I just thought the whole thing seemed turgid, slow and dull. It also seemed obvious they were desperate to try and fill the time. Has anyone else ever seen a headline sequence as long as the one at 10.25? I thought it'd never end.
I don't object to the idea of a news hour, but personally I'd rather see the second half used to look at some of the previous stories in more depth, rather like the interactive 10 O' Clock News Extra used to do. (Incidentally what happened to that?)
Instead we're subjected to interminably long sport, business and headline updates. In contrast, the paper review, which was potentially the most engaging part, I found disappointingly brief.

I really don't understand why they don't use the same style of supers as those used on, for example, HARDtalk when it comes from N6. These could easily be adapted into the N24/World style, with a red block on the right (and perhaps a '10 News Hour' header bar), with the text on the right hand side, and these could also be adapted for use on the 1 and 6.
The current graphics set-up is simply appalling. The slug and name supers don't line up with anything else, and the situation also gives rise to the frankly unforgivable situation of having the 10 supers 'burned in' on reports, being played out on N24 and World with a second set of graphics animating over the lower half of them. Utterly risible.
