BBC 1 could have axed the trailors between programmes so that the ten would have run ontime, so we should actually tut at the BBC.
Although if you have a programme which is overrunning, running a couple of trails after it means that the live programme following it - which has an opt out in the first minute - might be a bit smoother as they have a minute of trails to work out their timings and get a clean count rather than crashing off the back of the overrunning programme.
We all know that the Ten o'Clock News "Hour" only really exists a phrase (the post-22:25 stuff on N24 is not desperately different from a normal N24 back-half-hour, and certainly isn't anything like the "proper" part of the Ten, in terms of it's style), right?
Well, it seems that the N24 pretence that "it's still part of the Ten, honestly" is only really maintained between 22:25-22:30. The handover from Huw Edwards is followed by a "10" sting, then the N24 presenter calls it "The Ten o'Clock News Hour", etc).
But, after the 22:26(ish) weather forecast, the N24 presenter tends to start calling it just plain old "BBC News 24" again, "24" stings are used rather than "10" stings, etc.
So, there really ISN'T a Ten "hour" at all, is there?

I agree that the back half hour needs some work, to create a sort 0f 10 o'clock News extra feel to the programme, but the programme has improved since its launch. The Stings after the Weather which used to say BBC News 24 have now been removed completely handing straight back to the presenter. I do believe that the hour would work better anchored by just Huw or Fiona, for the entire hour, or atleast from the same studio. They could put the business News in the regional news spot, and then return for the headlines at 10.32 followed by the weather, returning to the studio for the sport at 10.35 and the Newspapers at 10.47 and a reminder of the headlines just before 11 and then go to the weather, already to return to News 24 branded programming at 11.00pm.
It seems a bit pointless really - I suppose the sport and business segment offers something different but really since the move from 9pm to 10pm it's always been Newsnight that has been promoted as what you turn to for more on the news.
I wonder how long until News 24 just put Newsnight on at 10.30pm - perhaps signing both the 10pm and Newsnight bulletins to make it more of a public service than just a simulcast.

I agree. I find it odd that the Ten O'Clock News Hour is going out at the same time as Newsnight, because much of the two programmes' audiences would tend to overlap - and this is made worse by the fact that ITV's News at 10.30 is on at the same time, as is Question Time on Thursdays. That slot is far too crowded by current affairs programmes. On Thursdays, you have three of the five main terrestrial channels showing such programmes, so the audience for News 24 would, I would imagine, be quite low.

But News 24 is a news channel is it not? So really they cant show a lot else. What would you like them to show, Noel's House Party?

Lol, no - I'm merely saying that it seems odd to have a "special" programme like the Ten O'Clock News Hour at a time when there are so many other current affairs programmes on.

I personally think the News Hour DOES offer something quite different to Newsnight or the ITV News. The ITV News is essentially a repeat of the BBC 10pm bulletin, and Newsnight is a quite different programme with in-depth reports and long-form interviews.
On the other hand, the News Hour on N24 after 10:30 gives you a full sport briefing, the best and longest business bulletin of the day and a detailed look at the next day's newspapers - none of which you can get from ITV or Newsnight at that time, plus a weather forecast. I feel it's covering those extra "bits" of the news that don't get covered in the other bulletins.
I often watch it and find it an excellent accompaniment to the main 10pm bulletin.
Good idea in theory, but let down by the presenter change at half 10.
Couldn't they opt out at 2225 for the weather on both networks, with an anno along the lines of 'On News 24 in a moment, the latest sport etc while on BBC One the news where you are, but first the weather with ?', then at the end of the weather 'That's it for now', then N24 opts back to the 10 presenter(Huw / Fiona), while regions opt in, then the regions could do the national headlines as well ! (Don't the nations do something similar at 655pm?)
Also on the odd occasion a region(eg Midlands) opts out at 1035, the regional late newsreader(eg Nick Owen) could live announce that programme(similar to what they do with the 10 into Panorama on Sundays!), while the network/nations people announces the network programme.
Doesn't look like the simulcast will be happening tonight - the ridiculously-scheduled football on BBC1 looks to be going to extra time and the Ten will not start until at least 10.15pm.
I presume N24 will continue with Jane and Chris for half an hour - isn't this what happened the last time?
EDIT: Chris has just announced it'll be Ben Brown with the News Hour on N24.

It now looks like the Ten won't start until around 10.40pm!
