Since the trolls seem intent on closing these threads down, let a clique member try to get this back on track.

I find it quite surprising that the 'Ten' is not extended during the hustings unlike during previous elections.

What do you think of the current balance of national and international news?

I don't like the feel and the look of the Ten. I'm not keen on Huw, he doesn't hold the authority and granduer that Buerk/Sissons had on the Nine.

If I want news at 10pm, I'm more than likely to watch News 24.

Finally, a normal Ten O'clock news thread. Very Happy

I have always seen the 10 as being more concerned with international news than the 1 and the 6. During the election campaign, I would expect further domestic coverage but I have also been impressed with the Election Coverage on Newsnight that we have seen over the first days of the campaign.

They have actually extended the Ten, but only by 5 mins.

I like Huw - but I think Kirsty Wark would be good, and certainly better than Fiona Bruce who lacks 'gravitas' IMO.

Isn't it more that the BBC don't like "news clashes", so don't want the Ten to encroach too far into Newsnight territory?

Finally.....

The Ten really has shot down in my opinion. Huw doesn't hold the authority he should.
Geogre did the 10 last night and was far more suited than his usual 6 slot. The programme just lacks that, and to coin a phrase " X Factor ".
I remember when the BBC Four/World News launched and they had that very dark and dramatic set, I think this would be really suited to the 10, before some morron with Green and white crayons went in.....

I hate to mention it but has this "Pool of presenters" dried up? There was rumours of changes in the Presenter line-up, all of which seem to have faild to materialise, is this then the case?

I think it needs to cover more international news. If you look at any other news programme from another country you'll see that there is a lot more international news. I accept that just now, with an election in the not too distant future, there will be a lot more domestic coverage.

On the issue of presenters, I like Huw, but I preferred him on the Six. I agree that George is good, but I would choose Darren to anchor it, with George standing in. I also like Fiona on the Ten.

I wonder if it's also the presentation that lacks the gravitas, and that's rubbing off on the presenters.

I don't want to sound like I am stuck in the past, but the news was 'announced' by an orchestral fanfare and a big newsroom.

I know this is on a wider point, but it does seem to fit in with the whole dumbing down of BBC News.

Jonny I have to agree with you on the BBC's News of late.
I was recently watching an old copy of the one o'clock news with Edward Stourton and was quite shocked at how powerful the whole thing was, and again I don't want to sound like some winging old git but compared with todays "Mix" and set it's almost laughable.

And on your wider note, I beleive the BBC should donote more time World Affairs, but this current package of crap music, silly titles and naff set really should be reviewed, but alas 15% cuts loom so any changes are doomed until 2008....ish....

15% cuts? ? ?

Really?...To News? That's a lot!

I would have thought that News would have been as insulated as possible from cuts...and that those would have been focused on management areas (like finance, HR, marketing and all those ridiculous people who do focus groups so they can get the socio-economic balance right in the BBC's branding)...and less important programming.

I suspect that the major Election stuff will kick in next week - after the Pope's Funeral and the Royal Wedding.

I'd expect full election overdrive (and extended bulletins) to start from Monday.

As for the cuts - nowhere is immune. AIUI News have been promised re-investment of much of their savings (though for new developments and programmes, not more money for existing ones?) - other departments are being hit far harder (Factual for example - who are losing around 400 staff?)

That's interesting...

I like Huw as a person, but not the way he presents. He's nearly too casual, and tends to shout a bit - surprisingly noticable over the Pope coverage.
Have to say I don't like Darren at all at all - I know that'll put a lot of people's backs up here Smile, but I find he just doesn't relate to the viewer at all - he's too blank if that makes sense, you just can't get to know him I find.
Whereas grand authoritative newsreaders can also be 'blank', you still get a sense of the person underneath - by contrast Darren is just too neutral and bland - even his greetings and closing comments are official and distant.

Yes, the grandness needs to be reintroduced to Ten more than any other bulletin - I miss it Sad
