When it comes to the Party Conferences I think sometimes the Breakfast presenter has stayed in Salford throughout the programme incase the OB fell off air - that might have been dependant on where the OB was coming from.

I find that hard to believe - wouldn't they be more likely to have a newsreader in Studio B on those occasions who could also present if the OB failed?

If the OB failed because of an issue at NBH, having your back up presenter on a different remote location seems a bit risky.

Or wouldn’t they just switch to the News Channel? That seems most cost effective and easiest option.

Why would Marr be treated any differently to any other BBC One OB programme that falls off air? Surely network would just respond with a breakdown slide and then filler programme if required?

If the News Channel is carrying Breakfast the same fault could have taken that off air too!

But for a fairly high profile BBC One show you would expect something slicker. Even regional news shows have somebody sat in the studio when they present from off site, ready to pick up if the OB goes down.

I find it very hard to believe that a network programme wouldn't have the same, ideally with somebody sufficiently briefed to able to interview any DTL guests that are still available and a bunch of standby VT packages to buy sufficient time to either get the OB back or - if it's really gone pear shaped - agree a clean way to abandon the programme that doesn't catch pres on the hop.

It depends, if Marr is an OB direct into pres then sure, but I think it's usually all still coordinated through Gallery B, so if the OB fails the gallery is still on air and can play out filler packages that could be more topical and relevant that whatever network have.

Theoretically, if Gallery B stays on air and sustains, they can get the OB back on air more quickly once the link is re-established.

A a regional news programme can quite easily pick up the running order and run the VTs. Marr relies on guests, the vast majority of whom are in studio-based, particularly at party conference - what is a presenter sitting in the studio supposed to do if the OB fails with no guests to chat to? Do a jig?

Introduce a standby VT, or improvise a look at the papers. Then if it's not possible to continue, end the show cleanly.

Crashing out to the breakdown routine is a last resort.

I don’t really see how that is any slicker than just handing to the News Channel? It’s certainly cheaper.

Video posted BBC Politics Twitter account showing the studio refurb. Some rather slimline screens and interesting music.

I really hope that music is the theme...

I really like the graphics and music. I just wonder why they don't carry on the simulcast on BBC News and do it for the whole hour?
