they were both mistakes. Axing the original NaT left a hole in the schedule and created the perception that ITV put ratings and profits above delivering quality news. Rightly or wrongly, those problems remain 8 years on. I'm not sure how anyone can argue against that.

I could have a go - but I won't! Wink

I wouldn't say the quality of the news programmes dropped at all immediately after News at Ten ended - yes, the presentation became more viewer friendly, but there was no definate drop in quality.

Those problems began a couple of years later IMO - when the bulletin returned, and ITV News had moved on and therefore the new News at Ten did seem drastically dumbed down - with the shorter running time not helping either!

There is no denying ITV News has had it's problems - but when you concentrate on the good stuff it's proof they can still deliver - and I do believe they are now beginning to learn from their mistakes. Celebrity Big Brother was a turning point for me - while the BBC and Sky were leading with it, it was generally towards the end of ITV's running order - though arguably mainly as they'd shipped Mark Austin off to the South Pole!

Would not suprise me. Remember Michael Grade has all the inside information on what the BBC was planning for the next 5 years and the news service is at the heart of the BBC. He also has stated that he wants to bring quality to ITV. A decent news service would give an air of prestige.

I'm not sure, London's LBC 97.3 just broke the news on the radio. Seems it may well be true. They also added that the chimes of Big Ben would also be making a comeback.

Since when did the chimes disappear? Rolling Eyes

To whom - mainly those who don't watch ITV!

It's the programming that's the key - yes, news is part of that but showing one news bulletin half an hour earlier isn't going to improve ITV's reputation amongst the general viewers!

The only news bulletin that needs shifting is the Lunchtime News back to 12.30pm - where it has a decent inheritance from This Morning.

If the audience at that time doesn't like the news they'll come back when the bulletin is over at 1pm and the news kicks in on BBC1!

Is the story one of those standard The Sun ones that goes like this

ITV TO BRING BACK NEWS AT TEN
ITV are thought to be considering bringing back News at Ten and they
may even get Trevor McDonald to present it again. A source close to Sir
Trevor says... blah blah. News at Ten was axed blah blah.............
An ITV Spokesman says there are currently no plans to bring back News at Ten

Well I've read the story and it was exactly like that!

Must be a slow news day even for The Sun, having this on the front page

Even if it was true, the only front page I'd expect it to be on would be Broadcast

It's nothing but hyperbole.

Do you know what hyperbole means?

a way of speaking or writing that makes someone or something sound bigger, better, more, etc. than they are

So its not hyperbole, it's "invention" or "garbage".

I know that, but I was referring to how they took some stupid rumor, and inflated it to a story that sounds credible, even though it isn't, so I think I used the word correctly in that context.

Not really. Quote Oxford Concise Dictionary : "Rhetoric: An exgagerated statement not meant to be taken seriously "

I think it would be fair to say The Sun wanted the story to be taken seriously.

I feel that bringing back News at Ten would be a dreadful decision for ITV to take. Look at how the 2001-2004 News at Ten did compaired to the BBC Ten O'Clock News.

Also this would mean dramas would be interupted for the news again and I don't think ITV1 wants to return to that again.

I do feel however that the ITV News at 10:30 should get a new look. The programme feels abit tired with the newswall. Lets have a proper set back again not virtual green screen sets?

What does people think?
