Aparently the press are causing many problems for Suffolk Police (I've got this information off my dad who is on their voluntry Search and Rescue team, and therefore connected). To quote his words, they are calling the shots. They keep sending the police back because they've missed shots or the lighting was dodgy, they are getting in the way of normal police opperation (such as interviewing people), they are following ALL police cars and now even listening into police radio broadcasts on scanners (dispite the fact it is illegal). Apparently John Suchet and his team is the worst of the lot. Typical press trying to get an exclusive Rolling Eyes

the police have been feeding the media beast their every cough and spit so far for their own benefit - it would be slightly difficult for them to turn round and decide that they are now fed up.
I know nothing about the Suffolk Police - i take it they are unused to dealing with the press on this scale?

Is it normal to name a suspect before charge ?

Nothing new there - several celebs have their careers ruined without any charges being bought.

What happens quite often in big cases like this is someone is arrested and named across the media - and then when they are charged they are prevented from naming them for legal reasons!

I don't think they've dealt with anything on this scale before.

I don't suppose any police force apart from the Met is used to dealing with such media attention. I know police draft in extra officers, do they draft in more experienced press officers too?

Was that the old sombre music I heard getting an airing?

Not exactly...

It was a mix of the sombre music and the old music introduced when Lambie Nairn redesigned the titles, set.

Not exactly...

It was a mix of the BBC World somber titles and the 99 national close...

Um..... that entire BBC report struck me as dangerously close to Contempt of Court there. Going into all the background, the previous interviews, his personal circumstances... all when the case is active after an arrest.

Is the interpretation in England that different from Scotland, or were they just playing the percentages? You could make a case that the interview will be used as police evidence and that enough time will pass for people to forget the report if there is a court case, but it's dodgy.

It just seemed like trial by media to me there - apart from a hastily thrown in 'of course he's pleading innocent' at the end, any half-decent lawyer could argue the guy wont get a fair trial.

I think they're drawing lots in the newsroom as to who's executioner

I thought exactly the same thing, especially some of the vox pops from neighbours "i never thought a person like him would live here" or words to that effect...
