I don't see that Aberdeen as the background is that much of an issue, to be honest. When I was up there in the pre STV news North Tonight era, the late bulletin always used to finish with Norman saying goodbye from "the newsroom in Aberdeen", and lest we forget the station used to be called Grampian. Plus BBC Scotland has a Glasgow background.

As for the recurring complaints about the lack of opts up north, STV is already doing way more than it has to. The Glasgow and Edinburgh opts presumably make some sort of commercial sense (God knows how though, given the staffing implications in increasingly tough times) because of the higher populations.

Introducing an opt for Inverness is pushing it, and doing two separate programmes for Aberdeen and Dundee would create more problems than it solves because people in Aberdeen would suddenly lose all the news from Dundee and only get coverage from areas such as Inverness and Shetland, which are far further away. It would be the equivalent of viewers in Glasgow getting news from Oban but nothing from Ayrshire. The opt out as it is isn't perfect, as it already raises that issue, but at least it's not through the whole show.

Was the weekend bulletin pan-regional again yesterday?

Gordon Chree has confirmed to me that weekend bulletins are now pan-Scottish, coming from Glasgow.

Agree with most of your points and while I accept your arguments about relevance of news stories for certain geographical audiences, I do think that with Inverness continuing to grow that there may come a point whereby STV needs to consider an opt out segment for Inverness and Highland viewers. News in Aberdeen is as much relevant to Invernessians as Dundonians afterall.

However, STV are not loaded and I think any further developments may take many years to be realised. Many North viewers do hope this will happen in time though!

There was quite a big mix up on STV News at Six North coming out of the local bulletin tonight.

When the next report started, they stayed in the studeo and Norman was coughing and sighing, saying "quite a lot of reading tonight" and Tyrone walked in front of the camera drinking from a bottle of cola.

You are right to question the commercial sense of the Edinburgh / Glasgow split? The cost soaked up most likely with the huge staffing cutbacks in Aberdeen!!Two separate programmes for Dundee / Aberdeen would be just stupid but an opt for Inverness was promised by stv (years ago now) and is justified.....how can news in Shetland be local to someone in Stonehaven???

When exactly did STV "promise" an Inverness opt? It was my understanding that it was being looked at, not "promised" as you say.

In their annual statement (years ago). They promised opts for both Dundee and Inverness??

I think now with the news at weekends coming from Glasgow and with STV tightening its purse, it looks like it will be Reporters presenting hence no more Rachel McTavish.

First week this weekend and it was Kelly-Ann, lets hope it will be Rachel next weekend.

Hmmm I don't think that's a good move actually, she is far better in Tayside for working on Radio Tay News and latterly STV North.
