STV Group plc posted:
STV confirms news programme for Edinburgh and the East; and confirms ambitious news and current affairs strategy and commitment to innovative local news services.
STV today outlines its future plans for the innovative delivery of news and current affairs services across Scotland, making STV News the most comprehensive local service in the UK.
Following the successful trial of a new technology platform from May 2011, enabling us to deliver a dedicated news programme for Edinburgh and the east of Scotland, STV today confirms that this service will continue. This means that STV will broadcast three distinct 30 minute programmes each evening: one for the East, one in the West, and a dedicated programme for the north of Scotland, including a bulletin for the Dundee and Tayside area. STV news operations around the country will retain full editorial control and autonomy over their respective regions.
STV’s audience share at 6pm goes from strength to strength, and has increased 11% year on year (Jun-Sep) across Scotland, with around half a million viewers watching each weeknight, and the on-air service reaching over 1.7m viewers per week. News is a hugely popular area of our website, with over half a million unique users visiting stv.tv/news each month.
In addition, STV will launch Scotland Tonight, a news and current affairs programme bringing viewers across Scotland an in-depth look at the big news stories of the day along with politics, sports, business, art, entertainment, live studio guests and special features. Scotland Tonight will start at 10.30pm on 24 October.[/b]

Looks like a great way to celebrate Grampian's 50th, practically shutting it down

Does this mean no news programme from Aberdeen any more?

Maybe I missed something, but didn't suggest to me that news from Aberdeen would be kept. Seems to talk (or hint) about a unified east coast news to me.

It doesn't say any news is being cut!
It says that news jobs are being cut with the majority being in aberdeen.
So far highest profile departure has been Louise White in Glasgow.
Every chance it will be a couple of reporters and the operational stuff will be moved to Glasgow. Edinburgh and Glasgow shows are all edited and controlled from Glasgow, looks like Aberdeen will be too.
Possibly a News Editor will go too! Donald or Howard with one remaining for whole of Scotland.

And what about the opt for the Highlands??? This once again slaps the North in the face!! How can a local opt for me in Aberdeen feature news from Shetland?
Shocking!!!

Dundee (but only on freeview and cable) and no local opt for the Highlands as promised by stv years ago......once again they are making a fool of the North!

If you live in Dumfries, you get your news from Newcastle, and 15 minutes of coverage which can include stories from Newcastle.
On the BBC, you get one news programme for whole of Scotland, with the north inevitably playing a smaller part as the capital and biggest cities are in the central belt.
So while I realise the former Grampian region isn't getting quite as good a deal as the central belt, and that the Aberdeen opt featuring news from the very very very very very far north isn't ideal, it could be a hell of a lot worse. And again, STV is not obliged to do any of this. It could easily have applied to Ofcom to merge the two regions and would probably have been allowed to do so.

I agree with the points made by both Barney and pcuk - but wonder if this route would include more of a Scotland wide coverage. The investment seems to be more linked to local services and that seems to be beefed up. I do not think the Highlands will receive a more localised bulletin for some time anyway - especially if other projects are being tried and tested.
It is good news that Edinburgh has an opt out - but wonder if the North edition of STV News and Six will see any changes to bring it in line with the Glasgow and Edinburgh versions any time soon?
Scotland Tonight will probably have a Glasgow based presenter and I would say that an existing STV News journalist will lead this - they are not going to bring any one in for this. They may even opt for Aberdeen and Glasgow based presenters??
