STV News

That was fast, She was still doing STV reports on Friday. Rachel McTavish. Has been doing the East all this week. I wonder what titles we shall see on Monday, Not heard anything about Laura Miller yet.

Laura Miller appeared in the titles all of last week.

I love the new STV news set. In my opinion its the best UK set on air right now. its a unique shape. Reminds me of the CBC news network set. A curve a then one straight side where the video wall is located. It love the corner with the vertical 'fins' and the lit riser under the news wall. I do like the idea of the complete image wrapping the set. BUT Im done with Lightwell. I frankly find them so boring now. They are all basically the same. An empty lobby or newsroom during a fire drill. And the fact that many of the major UK broadcasters use them and they are all quite similar, just different colours, has totally turned me off them completely. Im done with Lightwell. I think its the only flaw on an otherwise brilliant set. To me it would have made sense to use a large curved video wall. Way more versatile. I do like the colour changing capability.

The new open is nothing like CBS News open at all. Its not similar at all. Second. Who rendered that? Its very badly done. Sorry. The idea is nice. But doesnt look well rendered. This open its very very similar in style to the CTV News National open. The CTV open is clear and well rendered. Not sure what happened to STV.


The Scotland Tonight graphics are completely different and well done. Not sure why they look and feel sooo different. The quality of the graphics render seems like it was done by a different graphics house from STV news graphics. Seems like the news graphics were done in house....or something and Scotland Tonight was done by an outside vendor. The Los Angeles location on the Scotland Tonight open feels off somehow..... not sure why. And its weird that Toronto/Montreal or even the capital Ottawa wasnt included considering the Commonwealth connection. Graphics aside, its a nice new look for STV news operation.

I think the STV News tonight titles are viewed as being CBS News in style due to the very orchestral music, which is no longer something associated with news themes in the UK, and also the way the titles cut (or jump in this case) to the music, with footage of reporters and cities - it certainly made me think CBS when I first saw it, even if the execution is very different.

Also as well, that piece of music for STV News is 11/12 years old now, which for regional news is pretty good going. I can't think of any other regional news programme using the same piece of music for that long.

To be fair it was updated around 2011? I have to agree its a great piece. Scotland tonight theme has been in use in 2011 but it was only give a minor update.

I don't see much of a resemblance with CBS News either, but there is a certain similarity to the previous CBS O&O graphics:

An certainly the CBS O&O graphics are rendered waaaay better. Seems like STV sorta dropped the ball on that open...sad to say it looks...amateurish. Considering a sizable amount of money was spent on the new look. I just find it amazing that open actually made it to air. Now that Im thinking..it looks like a vendor proof thats created to show the client the idea for the open. It really feels off.

Stunningly badly rendered. I love the theme (I'm a bit of a sucker for US-style news themes), like the set a lot, but it looks like the rendering was done on a computer nowhere near powerful enough for purpose, so stuttering was it.

It's infuriating because it's so obviously one update away from being really good...

Are people watching this on Freeview / sky? Or are people watching the tiles on youtube?

The stuttering may be a result of the way I captured the titles. No other way of getting them then to record from the stream itself.
