Do Glasgow and Edinburgh share so much content as standard - the first half was pretty much the same. Wonder who the reporters on the OBs hear - must be tricky not to slip up and refer to one of the hosts by name.

Surprised at the lack of floor managers, and presenters dragging their own chairs on and off set, but I guess if you don't have studio guests and you're working with presenters who know the studio and the relevant H&S issues an FM can appear an expensive luxury for a set piece programme.

STV has been like that for years, Hence the reason for misguided thoughts. Scotland Tonight is just the same etc

All three studios cover and share content, It just depends on the news. Stories might switch around, It might be very busy news day in one area and content is just put in via "Across Scotland" section

The arrangement makes sense really as the separate "North Tonight" and "Scotland Today" programmes made less sense post-devolution given so much news is now related to something the Scottish Government is doing or being criticised for. The example given is probably quite typical of a "normal" week when parliament is sitting, as the govt announcement on ending the council tax freeze affects all of the country in a similar way. Aberdeen led on the schoolboy murder story as it is very local to the Aberdeen area, and the same would happen if something like that affected more of a Strathclyde or Edinburgh area, the top stories would diverge.

Glasgow has by far the biggest newsroom and most staff, so I imagine they lead on managing the OBs. From watching the programme as a normal viewer (and seeing the video) the two-ways are highly scripted - obviously to fit the timings, and always start quite abruptly - none of the "That's right, John"or anything, it's straight into a "At the court behind me today..." or similar.

They will nearly always end "Back to you". In the clip, Colin MacKay at the Scottish Parliament was counted in and counted out, I suspect he might not even hear the presenter asking the question or even know who is presenting - he just speaks the answer to the agreed question. There is no natural, two-way conversation taking place or room for extra questions.

They get away with it very well though!

(EDIT: Sorry the OB reporter must hear a presenter. I suspect it's Glasgow when it's shared output.)

Edinburgh is particularly poor at covering its patch IMHO. The Glasgow and North editions really stand out to me as providing very strong, relatively hard news with limited resources. My experience of the Edinburgh service is that it is struggling with lack of resources. More often than not, there are Glasgow stories slotted in to fill up airtime. The Aberdeen show is great at getting the right mix. It definitely appears to have more autonomy than the Edinburgh edition, no doubt down to the history.

History and the fact that the Aberdeen programme is still a franchise requirement but Edinburgh is an added extra?

There's also the issue that a good chunk of the city (30ish%?) use Black Hill, and not Craigkelly, if anything the Glasgow version really needs to feature Edinburgh stories, which would undermine the whole idea of the split service in the first place !

Is the Edinburgh studio in Edinburgh or is that filmed in Glasgow?

Yes, it also where Colin and one of other senior reporters is also based.

The newsroom is in Fountainbridge. The whole Edinburgh operation (all east-based reporters) are there, except Colin MacKay, who is based at the Scottish Parliament.
