The Radio Times suggests that the 1800 programme is being renamed STV News at Six from Monday. The bulletins are still billed as "Scotland Today/North Tonight" although this may be a typo.
If the names are changing on Monday, this is no more than a branding exercise. The big changes in England required approval from Ofcom. STV has no current plans for big changes and has not sought permission from Ofcom.
Yes, it's the end of an era and I'm a little sorry. But the move makes practical sense. Since the Grampian name went, most of the Scottish newspapers have stopped publishing variations - with the result that North Tonight is only billed in the Radio Times and newspapers published within the former Grampian area like the Press and Journal.
If I thought there was no more to it than this I would not be worried.
But, of course, a common brand does make it easier to eventually amalgamate the two programmes. It's very hard to see why STV should actually be compelled to provide a distinct programme for the north after digital swichover without getting something back in return...
