The quality of BBC Scotland's news is diabolical just now.

This seems unnecessarily harsh and personal, unless you know any of these people from personal experience you're only judging it on on-screen persona.
In my experience in journalism, while you get the odd problem from new people who think they're 'IT', the major problems actually come from the old farts who've been round the block for decades, wont listen to any new ideas, only report on stuff they're interested in and wont listen to any constructive criticism. They dig themselves into a massive hole and become increasingly irrelevant, doing the same act that worked in the 70s that doesn't work now.
I'm not judging the BBC Scotland v STV talent base on this - that would be vastly unfair as I don't know any of them. However I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that STV are essentially the brash young underdogs battling against the far richer BBC - sometimes (often, in the case of Scotland Today) it produces far better results.
You seem to be judging the young reporters on the basis of - how dare these young kids come in and do big reports. That is, to me, completely wrong. The healthiest thing to happen in journalism in some time in my opinion is an influx of new talent. Some of the people who are in the business now who have been working for six months are better than some of the people who've been doing it for six years.
I also find it harsh that STV is being criticised for launching a new local show which, as far as I can see, they don't have to under their current rules as legislated by OFCOM. It is completely the opposite direction of the rest of the ITV network, and is surely to be welcomed?
I appreciate the central belt/north dilemma (great cars them - Ed) but in these days you're not going to get two separate 5.30pm shows for both regions. You're lucky the investment is going in to a new programme at all. As long as both Scotland Today/North Tonight continue to exist (and I appreciate many seeing the long term agenda being otherwise), then surely it's fair enough?
But then, as far as I'm concerned with commercial competition being higher than it's ever been, then truly regional Scottish news should be the BBC's job. But that's another debate. As it stands STV is providing far better regional coverage than the BBC, which is a damning indictment against our alleged public service broadcaster which seems to put more stock behind subsidising a ninth-rate soap opera and endless crap programmes which result in the scheduling looking like a car wreck on a weekly basis. It's like someone in Pacific Quay is trying to build an empire...

Don't think it will last long, to be honest. I'm stuggling to see what the point of it is? Probably be a bad attempt at trying to copy BBC One's The One Show TBH.
People will either pass by it and watch Scotland Today or either watch the programme and switch over once Scotland Today comes on?
Whoever came up with the show name, has to be a condender for a promotion at STV

stv today launches its brand new daily programme, the five thirty show, which hits screens across Scotland on Monday 28 January.
Presented by Stephen Jardine and Debi Edward, the five thirty show is a news-driven, magazine style programme covering all the relevant stories of the day, from news and features to sport and entertainment.
Every day, the team will discuss the topics that everyone’s talking about in an informal and accessible way - from the latest health news, how to pay off your debt and which films to see at the weekend, to all the latest sport stories, celebrity chats, music performances and live interviews with the people behind the headlines. If you’re talking about it, it’ll be on the five thirty show!
On Monday afternoon, viewers will be introduced to the new dedicated five thirty team, headed up by Stephen and Debi in the studio. Well-known stv presenter Vicky Lee and new face Natasha Stillwell will join the team as roving reporters, reporting from across the country and the rest of the world. Viewers will also recognise stv’s entertainment reporter Grant Lauchlan, sports reporter Gerry McCulloch and popular weatherman Sean Batty, who will present brand new, re-vamped weather graphics using all the latest technology.
In the first week, the show will include an exclusive performance and interview with Amy McDonald, currently sitting at the top of the UK album chart. The team also sends reports from NASA HQ in Houston, a celebrity Burns party in London and a risky expedition into the Cairngorms that has never been filmed before. In addition, we launch a fantastic competition with a chance to win a flat screen television every night for four weeks.
Viewers will also enjoy a range of exciting regular features including The Film Club, featuring the latest movie news and reviews from stv’s entertainment guru Grant Lauchlan; Race for Life, which follows roving reporter Vicky Lee as she trains for a 5k race in aid of Cancer Research; and The Pundit, where sports reporter Gerry McCulloch and new regular pundit Darryl Broadfoot discuss the weekend's action.
The new show has a strong interactive element and will invite viewers to contact the team via the web, email or text, giving them a real chance to influence the show's agenda and ask the questions they want answered.
Stephen Jardine said: “The five thirty show will be the place to go for all the relevant stories - the real watercooler topics that everyone’s talking about. We want viewers to be part of the show and interact with the team, to help us make the programme as relevant as possible to the stv audience.”
Debi Edward said: “It's very exciting to be launching the new show - there's a real buzz in the newsroom and after all the planning and preparation I just can’t wait to go live from the new set on Monday. We’ve got a host of great stories and guests lined up and I think it will be a great addition to the early evening schedule.”
Producer Hayley Valentine said: “The five thirty show is the only daily live magazine-style programme being made for Scottish viewers, and the great mix of news, features, sport and entertainment makes it a unique and really exciting offering from stv. "
The five thirty show builds on the ongoing success of stv’s main news programmes Scotland Today and North Tonight. Last year saw a 10% increase in audience share, as well as the launch of a popular five-minute local bulletin in both programmes.
Gordon Macmillan, Head of News at stv, said: “Our news has gone from strength to strength over the past year and I’m delighted that we’re investing even more in our news and current affairs output. By introducing this new live, half-hour programme, we’re taking control of our schedule, aiming to build audience in an underperforming slot. Across the full hour, our audience will now get a Scottish, regional and local news service. We have a strong connection with our evening news audience and we’re confident that viewers will enjoy this addition to our schedule.”

There is NOBODY from STV North in that picture.
The press release says, well-known STV presenter Vicky Lee – she is NOT well known to STV North viewers. It further states, viewers will also recognise STV’s entertainment reporter Grant Lauchlan, and sports reporter Gerry McCulloch. No, they won’t, the entertainment reporter for STV North is Chris Harvey, and Gerry is a complete unknown to STV North viewers. What more proof is needed that Glasgow couldn’t give two hoots about the North East of Scotland audience when they issue a press release with an obvious Glasgow bias.
As I said in this thread on 20th December 2007, everyone knows what this new news led programme will be; central belt based, central belt produced, fronted by well known central belt presenters, and a central belt agenda, with the token Grampian input.

Stephen’s C.V. doesn’t look too hot,
Room at the Top – AXED
Seven Days – AXED
Sunday Live – AXED.
Hogmanay shows – AXED or trounced by the BBC.
Not that any of the above is due to him personally. I prefer Stephen to Mr Smug who presents Scotland Today most of the week.
Talking of weather, during the festive period only one forecast was produced, as the captions on Grampian said Glasgow, and Edinburgh, as opposed to Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness; more central belt bias.

I think the programme actually looks quite good. It'll be interesting to see how it competes against Richard & Judy and Paul O'Grady.
New weather graphics too, I see.
