Wherever you live folks, don't forget to post which part of the service you get, then we'll all have an idea how it's likely to pan out. Wink

Will indeed be intereesting. I understand the opt-outs will last about 5 minutes so I just hope it doesn't make the show too disjointed. I can just imagine a formula like "headlines > local headlines > national news items > sport headlines > local news items > sport items > weather > national news re-cap" all with different presenters and different locations not being that pleasant to watch.

I hope I'm wrong though. I don't mind Scotland Today that much. Oh, but I will mind if it turns out to be just the Edinburgh Evening News read out on the telly. We already have it read out on the radio on that dire Talk107 station.

Is that all this 'new improved' Scotland Today amounts to?? A 5 minute regional opt out.

I was under the impression that they were to be entirely separate programmes. If they are just a short opt, it's hardly impressive especially considering most ITV plc regions these days have wholly seperate local versions of the same programme.

You're so sneery Nelad. What's that all about? I seldom see you write anything positive.

Anyone old enough to remember Scotland Today with Sheena McDonald and Haig Gordon will remember East/West opts on the programme.

Its not new to STV, just new in the sense that they haven't done them for a decade and a half.

Purely because I do not happen to subscribe to the Scotland Today fanclub, does not make my view any less valid. Incidentally you may not have seen me post anything positive, however I regret I am still awaiting you posting anything of interest!

All that hullabaloo about a quick 5 minutes - [[ Removed by mod - warning issued ]]. Laughing

So, was North Tonight's format just the same as Scotland Today's?

Sadly, I missed it...but from the descriptions I'd guess yes.
I take it that 'different editions' means 'different round ups' at SMG Towers?

Well it was certainly short and quick, not matter how long it was. Cool Everyone in Edinburgh, The Lothians and Fife had Stephen. Sad There might have been a wee lipsync problem at this end, which may have been out of sequence by at least a fraction of a second or so - that's just a guess by the way. Smile

It very much was the same. Norman McLeod the main presenter, Aberdeen opt-out done by Kirstin Gove. Curiously, when she was finished, McLeod said "Thanks, Kirstin!" I strongly suspect she did both and that they were recorded earlier - would appreciate if residents of Tayside/N.E Fife could confirm this.

I strongly suspect that this is but Phase I of the revamp - don't be too shocked if Phase II of this plan involves moving central presentation to Glasgow in due course (probably under the "compromise" branding of "Scotland Tonight") with mere opt-outs for Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dundee - when UTV finally get their mitts on us they will probably see this as a great money saving exercise.

Phase III would involve trying to involve the Borders in this - and no doubt this will come about if ever we come under the control of ITVplc. A move such as this move towards one cheap and not so cheerful news programme for all of Scotland would doubtless suit the bean counters there down to a tee.

Hmmm. It was all rather dissapointing really, from the west point of view nothing too radical. Whilst watching the east version, I nearly gouged my eyes out. Jardine is simply awful, I do hope there is some alternations. I agree with AMF - I wonder what STV mean by seperate bulletins, eh? Wink

Hi Gavin,
I don't think the east-west split in the 80s was actually a sub-opt like the one being introduced today.

The 1800 news bulletin at the start of Scotland Today was co-anchored from Glasgow and Edinburgh and went out across the whole of the STV area.

So while some of the news was indeed read from Edinburgh it was seen across the whole of Central Scotland.

Are you sure? I don't remember ever seeing a "West" bulletin within the programme, but it was a long time ago I suppose.

From what i remember back in 1980 (for what it's worth)Scotland Today was anchored by John Toye when it came to the news. Caroline Dempster would be read a story from the East (background set had East on it) and after that Nick Radcliffe would have a story from the West again the set had West on it then it was back to Caroline in the East and so on. It wasn't an optout though the whole of the central belt saw the stories from East and West.

Grampian also had a similar thing going on from what i remember .You would get the main news North Tonight with Selina Scott and John Duncanson from Aberdeen. Then after the north news it would cut to Ron Thomson in Dundee or sometimes Alan Saunders and you would get Tayside Tonight (it had that on the set ) but the whole of the Grampian region saw North and Tayside news the stuff from Tayside though was quite short.

Jings, Lewis! Indeed. I can remember all of that too - Toye, Radcliffe, Dempster. IMO, it was a good format and similar in the way that BBC World has a bulletin anchored from two different locations (LON and Washington).

I think that would be a good format to try out again at stv. Caroline Dempster was a redhead?? Refresh my memory. Thanks. James

No Caroline Dempster was more strawberry blond and Nick looked more of a red head with those awful glasses he used to wear.

Also lets not forget Marion White who read the news before the East West thing was introduced. She was pushed to the side. It was always John and Marion on Scotland Today which i liked .
