I must say it does frustrate me when people ask what's the need to host a show from the scene. Many of you would be the first to criticise ITV, etc if they 'didn't bother to get off their arses in cosy London and get out to the story'. Be honest now - you know you would!!

But that's not what I wish to discuss this evening Exclamation

I've noticed something with STV's news. I'm getting the impression that John Mackay is very much being hyped up as the news outfit's main anchor. I'm thinking that the new look Scotland Today will be solo-anchored when it relaunches. This complies with everything that I've been hearing because I understand that Steven Jardine is to be the face of the East of Scotland bulletins. So what do you think - STV News with John MacKay (west) and STV News with Steven Jardine (East)

That would be harping back to the old days of Scotland Today, when the programme used to be presented from two locations - Glasgow and Edinburgh, with a presenter in each location. However, IIRC, the "presenters" were very often continuity announcers who doubled up as newscasters on the channel - I can vaguely remember Mike Gower and Tony Currie being involved in the dual presentation as the Glasgow anchor, but cannot for the life of me remember who used to anchor the Edinburgh end.

Mr. Gower - I know you are regularly on these boards - could you perhaps enlighten us?

Thanks,
James

David Glencourse presented the Scottish News East versio of Scotland Today in the late eighties. He then went onto Sky News. Wink

Is the "new" news service an opt of the glasgow show or an entirley different show for us in the west and others in the east?If so, just how big are the edinburgh studios?Big enough for a mini/replica set of glasgow?

I'm not entirely sure if the east opt is going to be a stand alone show or not. SMG were quite vague in their original proposals (probably so they don't have to commit to anything if the plans go tits up) But I've heard through the grapevine that Stephen Jardine is doing the east, which makes me think that it's going to be two seperate programmes for east and west. (Like Anglia News is at the moment - only at weekends and early mornings do the two sites hook up for one Anglia News so it's basically two services)
There are problems with this though as the current offices in Edinburgh City Centre are probably not perfect for a full programme so a bit of work would need to be done.

The offices are indeed if i remember rightly quite small due to the centralised location but i dont think there will be a new office in edinbrugh.Perhaps two studios at PQ in Glasgow a bit like Anglia atm Wink

I wonder what these comments would mean if North Tonight takes a similar shape! We could have Norman and Pauline cover the Aberdeen version and Chris and Andrea take over the Dundee based show. If they opted for a single presenter set up - I'd say that they'd have one for Mon-Wednesday and the other for Thurs-Friday?
Even though, I am not sure that the new look programmes will be good quality and unmissable news programmes!!

I'm really getting worried now about the interregional split bulletin Confused I mean - Stevie Jardine for the East? Aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhh! Oh no! Sad I'd rather have John MacKay anyday. Cool

I think it would be a good idea to have something like this:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Lunchtime News: WEST - John Mackay || EAST - Stephen Jardine
Evening: WEST - John and Heather || EAST- Stephen and Louise
Late: WEST - Heather Simpson || EAST: Louise White

Tuesday, Thursday
Lunchtime News: WEST - Stephen Jardine || EAST - John Mackay
Evening: WEST - Stephen and Louise || EAST - John and Heather
Late: WEST - Louise White || EAST - Heather Simpson

Rotating the newsreaders, so that everyone gets to see them at some point in the week. Laughing
Just a thought...
