I think the clyde backdrop is rather nice.
Maybe the BBC could drop their River Clyde backdrop, maybe have a montage of Scottish landmarks instead.

I think that the thinking behind the BBC backdrops is to mirror the geography of the studio location, not the region they are covering, so it appears to be a real window, rather than some graphical artifice.

What an excellent idea! I've long been in favour of programmes which are able to do both national/international and local in one go. Things that are happening in Scotland are of relevance to the Scottish people so it's right that they should take a high level in the running order. The passing of a new law or government matters in Scotland would naturally take the top story over some E-Coli kiddies someone in 'the South'.
When I worked as a journalist in radio there areas are much smaller, but there's nothing better than for people to be able to hear the number one thing that's most important to them - be it a national story or a local story. Many evenings both this new Scottish evening news and the ITV equivalent will probably lead with the same stories but this proposal allows the issue most relevant to be presented in a running order that makes sense to the viewers.
As for the programme being an hour, I think you'll find there will be a significant amount of "lifestyle" type features that would allow the programme to get through all the important items first and then it's up to the viewer whether they stick round for the traditional lighter stories and the weather.
It is however a shame that it would signal the end of a split 6pm for the North and Central Scotland. I don't know the exact ins and outs of the current programmes but I imagine that a fair amount of story sharing goes on at times. I know it could be seen as a reduction but a more focussed programme with better sub opts could well turn out to be a better service. At least you've only got to produce one lot of "lighter" stories for the end of the programme so it should mean more time devoted to news. But, on that front I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I've not understood all of STV's recent moves but this is a positive step which highlights the broadcaster is thinking seriously about how it produces television rather than just follow the rest and do it by numbers.
P.S. A slightly better quality pictures of the item that Gav has already scanned can be found at http://www.thesun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/news/2643374/STV-plan-news-Six-news-show.html.

you have forgotten the sport have you not? on both north and central it can take up 13mins
so it could look like this
10mins: Main news
10mins: local news
10mins: Sport
15 National/international news
5min of weather
I dare say to ad breaks at 20past and 40mins to.
4 mins of happy fluffy stories

Interesting... there was no ITN logo on their report the other night.

I'm sure STV would rather refer to the national news team as ITN rather than ITV News so it would be interesting to see what happened if this proposal got the green light.
I quite like the look of that. I'd be surprised if the ITN logo was used other than on a co-production endcap. I'd be even more surprised if they used that old version of the ITN logo.

Talking of weather, do STV still take the ITV National Weather then. I bet if they merged the programme they'd keep the two weather forecasts purely for the sponsorship deals.
Back to the main topic though and once again the Scottish viewer is being used as bait. This isn't about serving them better at all - it's about trying to get the taxpayer to fund their output.

What I wonder is say there was a major story in England, on ITV News Mark Austin is live at the scene as is someone from the BBC Six and it's all over BBC News Channel and Sky News
The question is, would the STV News Hour cover it, if yes where in the running order and would they just have a report or send a reporter to cover it live?

Seeing as ITN will be co-producing the bulletin I would say it's fairly likely they would have access to the running order of the ITV Evening News. If they're paying ITN for the content then there's no reason that whoever is out on location couldn't appear uniquely on STV and then if need be, could dip in to the ITV coverage. Not unlike how BBC News Channel and BBC World News share lives where each programme introduces the content but then shares the reporter.
As Gavin said, it could actually result in STV having the top national story at 6 with an ITN correspondent, as opposed to the BBC being all over it and having to wait until 6.30 if you're with ITV.

Looking forward to seeing this on the air, if it comes off. Though the idea is not entirely original...
In Granada's early days they had a similar format produced in association with ITN, local, national and international.
