I don't think Huw is the right person to present election coverage, and it kind of feels like it will never be him presenting. Maybe it's like someone said - he's "just" the main news anchor, whereas Dimbleby is sort of elevated above that status.

I'd love to see either Fiona Bruce or Kirsty Young take over from Dimbleby, personally.

What is it about Dimbleby? Since I've only had access to World News since about 2010 I've seen him anchor election night. In the most recent referendum coverage (to me atleast) he seemed disinterested and tired. Maybe he just doesn't know when to end it or is it the BBC feeling that they need to have him on to continue the tradition of his father?

Now maybe if I saw him more regularly like if Question Time was carried internationally I'd have a different opinion.

He has gravitas, that's the main thing. He makes it sound important.

This and possibly for me because Dimbleby comes from a current affairs background rather than being known as a newsreader, so makes it more of an 'event' rather than an extended news bulletin.

I dunno really, it's not that Huw's bad but I've always felt he's not really in the same league as Dimbleby, even with the mistakes made in the last few results shows.

Personally I would have liked it if Nick Robinson was still part of the coverage.

He may well be involved in Radio 4. Have they confirmed who their line-up will be? Is Jim Naughtie still involved?

Never really taken much note of what radio do. Don't 5Live and Radio 4 merge for the night? I guess World Service would carry it as well

Yes for an election special with a R4 and a R5 presenter.

I wonder if both the BBC and ITV will be re-using their 2015 election sets? ITV took their 2015 election virtual studio and tweaked it a bit for the EU Referendum in 2016, I wonder of they will simply tweak it again for this year.

Over on the BBC, in 2015 the took their 2010 set and re-jigged it as one BBC production team called it, it was virtually the same massive design as 2010. I wonder if they will get it out of storage and get another election out of it?

Studio D at Elstree I assume will once again play host to BBC Election coverage with ITV crammed into their small virtual studio at Grays Inn Road as usual I assume too.

I seem to remember that the BBC 2015 General Election set was designed to be quickly restruck again as with the Con/LD partnership was expected to just hold on - but then expected to fracture within 6 months leading to another General Election in the October.

History told us otherwise. So I would expect the same set to be reused because in June, because
a) It was designed to be.
b) the election was called so quickly, there probably isn't enough time to draw, build, construct, and test a new one from scratch in the 7 weeks we have to play with.

100% sure it'll be Studio D at BBC Elstree. TC1 isn't due back 'on line' until September time.

Slightly off topic but do we know which studio the BBC will be presenting the results of the local elections from. Studio B at NBH or Elstree (to use it as a dry run for the General Election in June)?

I notice that Huw Edwards is featured on a promo that's running on the News channel for the local and combined authority Mayoral elections in the newsroom 'pit' area, as seen on the trundle cam at the TOTHs. It could just be used for effect on the promo, but could we see some presentation from the newsroom itself on local election night?

Election Night will probably be Millbank - the only overnight coverage appears to be an extended This Week until 1am

The main coverage is during the day on Friday - which means Studio B will be unavailable unless World News don't use it as normal. Hasn't Millbank been used for daytime local election coverage before as well? There is no Daily Politics so the studio should be available

Yes, for the locals in 2013 but it did look awfully cramped with Emily's screen in the corner, a large desk and 4-5 guests plus the presenter (Huw) in the studio.

That's strange, we've usually seen special coverage overnight for the locals, we certainly did last year. You'd think they'd bother this time given how we have the first mayoral elections in many places, and how it will give a good look into what's going to happen the month after.

Most areas (if not all) have daytime counts for the combined authority Mayoral elections, it's the same for the local elections. I'm covering the Cambridge City count for the County Council and Mayoral elections which get underway from 9-10am on Friday, with the verification process happening on Thursday night after the polls close.
