Nice to see that Jersey is the only region* that has its opt chain set up "properly" - if Leeds tried this it would end up with curtains in 14:9.

*Although I guess that's more to do with the fact that there isn't an analogue version of BBC1 CI as it's DSat derived

I'm scratching my head as to how they actually do this!

AIUI there is no network feed to Jersey, instead Plymouth switch between BBC One South West (post-Plymouth opt?) and Jersey studio incoming (down a bunch of data circuits used to deliver 8Mbs video) To key a strap over network they'd :

1. Have to key the strap in Plymouth - which would have to be 16: 9 because the opt-chain is entirely 16:9 video.
2. Key the strap over the off-air DSat feed prior to it hitting the transmitters - but this would be 4:3 and not visible on DSat.

I wonder... I guess it has to be 1. Could there be a DOG generator in Plymouth that is being switched in and out to generate the strap? (AIUI there were DOG generators in every region installed for the tests - and "future expansion"...)

Nice set for such a small space - though it looks like they have bought cheap "brick" cameras more usually used for down-the-line studios, rather than broadcast studio cameras - though this may have been a space issue...

*** EDIT - now I've seen the pics on the WIL site - it is obviously a space issue. The cameras are right up against the wall! ***

I think the images behind the frosting are likely to be duratrans lightboxes or photo blow ups. They aren't CSO - and I doubt they are projected if space and money are at a premium.

Interesting that the gallery is 4:3 - and they are using B&W CCTV-style monitors for preview. I suppose that 16:9 would only be available to Sky viewers...

You are correct, CIs are not part of the UK or the EU, neither is the Isle of Man.

I recorded Spotlight CI, I am very impressed with their new facilities. How come Jersey get a plamsa screen and Plymouth can't have one, although I notice that the Plymouth Studio now has what looks like a proper background behind the "soft" area used for the second half of the programme.

Over a year in the planning and they stuff up their first link - great to see the only thing to have changed is the set and the size of the chair... good old local bbc standards have not changed in the slightest...

Shame - i really thought we would have a new start...

I was just about to say how forgiving you lot were to miss the fade back into the VT of the handover from Plymouth, and the unsure vision mixing from the longshot high cam to the newsreader close shot at the start.

Never mind - first night nerves, obviously.

BTW - what's that red curved thing in the right hand corner of the studio. Is that to fix around the desk frontage to bring an occasional bit of relief from the harsh white?

I think i've found the answer to that question.....

"So how high do you think the BBC studio chair should be?"

Is it actually a plasma? I didn't manage to see the programme, but notice that in all these photos, all its displaying is a "Spotlight Channel Islands" logo. It's not just a lightbox, is it? Smile

The red curved thing, if you look closely, is part of a built-in fixture to partition the studio from the newsroom - through the frosted clear glass in the middle you can make out a staircase.

A very good effort, Spotlight. The funny thing is if you can get it so right with less space and (presumably) less of a budget for a smaller programme, then why the hell can't Reporting Scotland at least put licence-fee payers' money to good use and fix up that damned mess of a set?

It is a Plasma screen in the middle showing a tape of the Spotlight CI sting.

The red curve in the corner hides the spiral staircase that goes up to the newsroom - I will try and get a clearer photo of it later.

responding to some of the comments here - i think its really unfair to slate the production values of Spotlight CI - it really is a great programme of output and has the BBC values at heart - i agree with Mr Stabby - its straight news which is what we want - go for it spotlight ci! love the new set too!

Tuned in last night for the late Spotlight CI Bulletin, everything seemed ok when Emma popped up at the start of the 10 o clock news, when it was 1025, Spotlight CI failed to appear and opted to Plymouth...

Surely it would make some kind of sense to give Channel Island Viewers some kind of bulletin, even if it means opting back in a minute or so late rather than give them no news at all! Ive noticed this has happened a few times, why is this the case??

You would think being the first night of the re-launch they would get it right! Anyway apart from that, Ive had a look at the screen grabs and overall looks VERY Impressive, would much rather have a studio like theirs than the Midlands Today Studio I get to see everyday.

As I havent seen a bulletin yet though, can someone enlighten me have they changed the music to the LDN style or have they stuck with the current tune (up to last friday??)

They've kept the same titles and music.

As for the screwups on the first night, everyone has problems with new kit, i certainly do. Channel TV when they had their re-brand last year screwed up on their first night too. It's inevitable with new kit. I'm just happy the BBC have bought it upon themselves to pay for this nice new set.
