Anyone in St Helier or Plymouth care to spill the beans?
I'm sure someone told me about this once - they put that strap on because the line at this point, "now we join our news teams across the UK", doesn't apply to the Channel Islands.
The Channel Islands are not strictly part of the UK, although they are a British territory and part of the British Isles (not quite sure of the technicalities), so this strap is used to avoid any confusion on that count.
And perhaps more importantly, to avoid upsetting the Channel Islanders by lumping them in with the UK.
