Apparently today is the last day of the grey sofa on Spotlight, which is good news IMO as it always looked a bit dull (ala John Major on Spitting Image).

Wonder what we'll get instead? So long as it isn't those funny-shaped sofa/chair things that have been popping up all over the place...

Are we just talking about a new sofa, or a refresh of the set?

When are they due to move into their brand new building?

They're not due to move into Sutton Harbour until around 2011/2012.

The foundations are just going in on Sutton Road, which has been closed off for utilities since 3th January and generally causing chaos getting into the City Centre.

Given how quickly the new Foot Anstey Sargent building went up next door, the early part of 2011 is possible for the opening of the new BBC South West complex.

So what's going on at Seymour Road?

The presenters were at the desk for the whole show, but the angles were quite tight, so not sure if anything's going on in the 'soft area'?

I don't know for sure, but I would suggest that they may be creating a new set in what used to be the soft area. Not sure if Politics Show was at the desk or in t he soft area, with their own mini set. Will check up on iPlayer.

The 'soft area' is still being used for the Breakfast Bulletins, just with an armchair instead of the sofa. I don't think they have anywhere else to move that part of the set to, so I imagine it's still in the studio. It's difficult to think of what they could be doing that only required the sofa to be ditched.

It would seem that they are up to something in the spotlight studio as tonights edition had the weather CSO screen moved across from right side as we look at it to left. So rather than three CSO screens in the studio, including the one behind the presenters , there was only two.

The set certainly looks cutdown from what it usually is. Perhaps this is a temporary set and they are constructing a new set, or perhaps they have a separate breakfast set and a separate Politics Show set all in the one studio.

There are only two CSO screens in the studio. One behind the main desk and one in the middle which is used for the weather (except at breakfast) and 'standing' reports.

The screen in the 'soft/breakfast area' is back-projection and is only used for the weather during breakfast. During the evening it's used for the looped 'Barbican' video or report specific graphics.

The weather CSO screen appears on the left when being introduced from the main desk (ie at lunchtime & currently during the evening while they are 'sans sofa'). When they used to introduce the weather from the 'soft area' the screen appears on the right.

Normally they use long shots of the studio (as above) to give an impression of size. But as the 'soft area' isn't being used in the evenings at present then there is no point showing it, hence the rather tight shots showing just the desk and weather CSO screen.

The Politics Show has always come from the same studio (there is only one). The set sits in front of the fixed Spotlight set, around the back-projection screen in the soft area.

Apparently the sofa is "coming back soon" (although not the same one). There doesn't seem to be any explanation yet as to why it was removed. Whatever they are doing isn't visible on screen.

Very nice end to Spotlight tonight.

Pictures from around the South West with the some BBC News music over the top of it.

Westcountry like a few other regional new shows today proudly got their Chopper into action for us. Sharon Goble went up on high and gave us some stunning views of the countryside around the north coast.

Lovely views of Port Isaac , I was starting to pine for Doc Martin. Smile

I saw tonight that Westcountry Live have ditched the Live reverting to News in the title for the 6pm programme - how long has this been going on?
