Nothing for me can beat the Mike Debens and Ron Lobeck combination. Bev and Geoff get pretty close though. Phil and Charlotte border on the cringeworthy Confused

With all due respect to 'Hunchback' Hornby (I noticed someone called him that in an earlier thread! Laughing ), I think Charlotte & Glen Thompsett are a good double act. But in the South sub-region you can't beat Fred Dineage and Carl Tyler! I loved it on the ITV50 in the South programme when they mentioned the mic-tug incident following the Hayling Island tornado. As much as I like Gemma, Robin and Martyn, you can't get a better pair than Fred and Carl. Very Happy

Whatever happened to Mike Debens? Last I heard, he moved to France but I've never seen him on TV since 1997 when he left Meridian! There's a great outtake of him getting stressed out on TVS when he was told to "sparkle". Laughing

That's what I heard, I think he got too fed up with TV and turned his back on it.

For a time his eldest son went to the same primary school as me. Me and my mum were always amazed at how scruffy Mike looked in the mornings when compared to what he looked like on the TV later that same day Smile

Mrs Glen Thompsett being Julie 'Jambuster' Maddocks, formerly of Invicta Radio and now with BBC Radio Kent.

Aaah, so the "west" (a.k.a. "north"; a.k.a. "Thames Valley"...) sub-region does have it's own dedicated weather map after all!

But it has a large overlap zone with the "south" weather map (including both showing Basingstoke)

They do actually have their own weather map, but it's only used usually for the next day. Rather confusing! lol

From Carl's last appearance on Meridian:

Philippa Drew did the Sunday forecasts. I wonder where Gemma's gone then? Confused:

Gemma's either ill or has left in a dispute. Confused

The fact they've had to roll out Carl Tyler probably means Gemma's unwell.

I've been saying this for ages, ever since that Phil chap took over from Geoff Clark. Glen to me was the natural replacement. The show just lacks any sort of credibility or chemistry (which is so vital on any regional news show) Phil was/is a great reporter, but I'm not so sure about anchoring the main programme. Dare say nothing will change, he's no doubt a good mate of the management.

Phil reads the news like a kid standing up in a school assembly. Laughing

If he needs to lurch over the desk that much to read the autocue, he really should've gone to Specsavers. Laughing

Philippa was on the weather again today. I hope that if Gemma's unwell that she gets better soon. Still, I like Philippa. We in the Meridian are pretty lucky with our forecasters. We've got Gemma Humphries who does a great job (though I don't like the briefness of her forecasts on ITV Local). Martyn Davies the consumate professional, Robin Lermitte who always does a smooth job. The good old 'Dynamic Oracle' (as Fred Dinenage called him the last time before recently) Carl 'Misty and Murky' Tyler, and Philippa Drew who's new but doing really well. Smile Of course I can't forget Alina on South Today. She does a fab job. I miss Mike Powell, though I know he presents on BBC Points West now. He should come back from time to time. Smile

I find the weather presenters on our BBC South East Today awful, especially Kaddy Tea Press-on. - with the exception of Nick Miller.

Well, there we are, what an exciting day for the South East! Shocked

Incase anyone wants to know, South East Today showed footage of broadcasters across the world (i.e. CNN, tve, RTL, Euronews) and how they reported on the bank robbery, Geoff Clark reported live from Tonbridge all evening and £500,000 worth of satellite equipment was setup outside the Securitas deport.

Did anyone see how Meridian covered the story last night?
