What sort of background should 24 have in N6?

The background for a rolling news channel is important, and in the light of the poor previous N6 fake newsroom backgrounds, what should News 24 have in the screens when they move there?

Obviously if there were to be a real newsroom feed, they'd need to do something about the corners, like superimposing some fake pillars.

Story specific graphics could have such things as a full wall picture of the Palace of Westminster for politics stories, pictures of helicopters taking off (in slow motion) in the desert for Iraq stories etc. They'd need some pretty generic graphics for this though as it'd be impossible for a suitable graphic for all stories. In the case of breaking news when they haven't time to do a graphic, there'd be a breaking news background.

I think an animated background is essential for such an empty, small studio. They should have a good look at how Al Jazera use their screens, something nice and simple that won't distract nor bore the viewer. A real newsroom is of course the perfect background but I wouldn't like a fake newsroom - they look naff very quickly.

I do hope they make the best use of the screens so we don't have to stare at a microphone stand in fullscreen while waiting for a press conference or cutaway from a studio guest for some stock footage of someone at a computer or such.

Skyline at night, newsroom during the day - though as long as it's done well I'm not bothered whether it's real or not.

Another option would be a globe/map zoomed in on the area of the world they are covering at the time.

Same as News at Ten in the late eighties/early nineties, which had a blurred illuminated backdrop of (one assumes) the city of London.

But why London?

He said assumes, which means it could easily be anywhere, which is what is needed.

I didn't mean that the new proposed N24 backdrop should be London, but rather that the News at Ten backdrop I was referring to was (one assumes) the city of London.

What I would actually like to have is the same cityscape, but not neccessarily London or any other specific city.

So the same as is currently in N6!

I'm pretty sure I've seen the London Eye on at some point on the backdrop skyline, though.

Well it's certainly an evenly balanced poll so far! I hope those that run News 24 are reaching an easier decision!

Graphics do work, especially if they do it well. The difference with Al Jazera is the fact that there studios and screens are massive, There's no way that they can replicate that in N6.

I still think that the 1999 set looked a lot bigger because of the simple, spacious and curved design, and you could see a newsroom too.

Is the plan to build a set also, so that the screen act as a background? Or will it be to do as the BBC One bulletins do at the moment?
