Tends to be Simon rather than Bill at the moment due to the excessive amout of 6 presenting Bill has been doing.
Bill & Liz were good, I remember watching that and thinking the same thing.
Bill is one of the best presenters on BBC News, warm and friendly with a personality but also a lot of authority. He turns his hand well to anything he does (News 24, Breakfast, the 6, Climate Change specials...) and seems to have excellent chemistry with every female he ever ends up presenting with.
As for the question of "where has he come from?", he was a news correspondent in the late 80s and 90s reporting from a number of locations including Moscow, and then Washington correspondent for several years. He joined News 24 as a presenter soon after the launch, presented on Radio 5 Live for a while and then joined Breakfast in 2001, and the Six O'Clock News in 2003. (Amazing what you can find out from the Breakfast website).
So he certainly has credentials, and I think he's one of the most natural, assured news presenters out there.
And Bill & Moira should be interesting if nothing else (if, of course, this rumour is true).

Bill and Susanna this morning.
And true, he was in Washington, that's where he met Sian when she was his producer, and the "Bill and Sian TM " partnership has stayed with us until recently!

Too right. It's utter nonsense to say that Moira shouldn't be presenting main news bulletins just because she hasn't done a crappy eight-month postgrad course at a former Poly. [quote]
That's a really harsh attack on Sophie!!!! Remember see did French and German at the University of Manchester which is a very good RED - BRICK university.

What on earth are you on about? I was merely commenting on how some people on this forum seem to think that Moira shouldn't be doing a main news programme because she's not a trained journalist. I was pointing out that you can get letters after your name to say you're a journalist by attending some very poor postgrad courses which hardly compare to Moira's 30+ years in the business. I didn't make any references to Sophie at all, and what she did at undergraduate level is totally beside the point.
