Sky have just run a report about the US Patriot Act, in relation to the UK terror laws going through the Lords.

Introducing it as 'an Act that is widely accepted as necessary' (which is twaddle) the report included an interview with a woman called Catherine Herridge, who they labelled 'Counter-terrorism Expert' or something along those lines.

She basically said 'Patriot act is vital, v. important, US government sees it as useful'. Whoopee.

But Catherine Herridge is not a terrorism expert, with an independent view on things. Catherine Herridge is a Fox News correspondent, and no more expert than the rest of us. Yes, she has covered 'the war on terror', but is there a US journalist who hasn't?

Not often that I criticise them, granted, but reporting like that is not on. If Sky are going to start introducing Fox News correspondents to give their US-government-fed opinions on US politics, whilst introducing them as 'experts' that we should all believe, they're on seriously dodgy ground.

I ve just seen it as well. Im quite franky amazed. As British journalist Ive always been taught to represent all view, whilst providing imparsal news. I find American network news cringeworthy and decetful. If Sky are now showing a very patriotic channels interuptation of our world, and lets not forget they played the national anthem every hour during the Iraq War and described anti-war protesters as Terror supporters, then London ought to at least check through the report. I couldn't beleive what I was seeing, rather than been told of the debate/wants of people trying to get this through I was effectivly told what to believe, backed up by supposed experts, and "facts". Sky also announced they were heading for a more "americanised" bulletins, so id this the shape of things to come?

*oh my sides are splitting* Is half term still on? If that's all you can add to this convo you really are a waste of flesh.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Sky One planning to Americanise their output style too? I presume this will be more along the lines of turning their break structure into that of ABC1. What is the whole theory behind this trying to emulate American TV and News that Sky are into at the moment. Is it meant to be making them attractive for investment or something or is it just Murdoch flexing his money?

Surprised Okay!
Hey i love Sky news and they are my newschannel of choice ( everyone has their cross to bear) and deserves every award they have won.
The problem with Sky is ,why? When they have so many amazing foreign correspondants do they use so called Fox experts for their reports. Anything that comes from fox is questionable, i take what they say with about a kilo of salt .

I'm not really known for my sense of humour but you got to give me 10/10 for trying. Wink

I'm surprised, to be honest, but concerned. By all accounts Rupert Murdoch would love Sky News to be like Fox, but thanks to the broadcasting regulations in this country, he can't do it. (for now, although given enough years and enough complaining to the government, he could no doubt get that sorted as well). For the time being, it might be worth those who saw the report complaining to the world's worst regulator, OFCOM, to see if they do anything (I didn't see it, so I'm not going to join the Mediawatch brigade and complain about something I've not seen).

I always turn Sky off when a Fox News correspondent comes on (you can spot them a mile off - they're blonde, female, young and morons - that is not a sexist statement, simply that Fox always go for eye candy rather than reporters).

By many accounts Sky reporters don't have much time for their Fox counterparts and vice versa either - wasn't there some sort of dispute between the two over the Iraq war?

Normally Sky are capable of some degree of impartiality though, so it's a surprise this happened. A sign of things to come, or a blip?

Yep - I don't think there is a lot of love lost between Sky News reporters and their Fox counterparts. Many of Sky's reporters cut their teeth at the BBC or ITN, and have a high degree of integrity and impartiality to their journalism. Along with most BBC and ITN reporters, most Sky reporters follow roughly the same journalistic rules. Sky is seen as a very credible news service in the UK, and within BBC and ITN newsrooms as a result.

Fox isn't...
