It's worth pointing out that the BBC won 10 categories, compared with 4 for ITV; 1 for Channel 4; and 1 for Sky so I think it can be said it was the BBC's night at the awards ...
The beeb got the following :-
News Programme of the Year - The Ten O'Clock News
The Home News Award - Newsnight
News Event - The Ten O'Clock News and Panorama for Darfur.
The Innovation Award - Newsnight.
Alex Millar, Young Journalist of the Year
Wales Today as the best regional Daily News magazine
Panorama in the Home Current Affairs category
This World in the International Current Affairs section
Fred Scott as Camera Operator of the Year
Sarah Barclay, Specialist Journalist.

Depends which category you believe is the main one. As most people still get their tv news from the traditional bulletin, I'd have thought the Ten won the "main" one.

To be honest I'm at a loss to understand why Sky has won this award again.

News 24 has a better, all-round schedule incorporating standalone programmes such as Reporters, Business Today and Click Online. N24 was recently told to be "less like Sky". Having done this, it has been rewarded with this kick in the teeth.

Sky has no character to its news with its tacky onscreen graphics, unintelligible weather presentation and continuing reliance on presenters with smug faces and dodgy haircuts.

It is still broadcast in 4:3, a ratio which should really only now be on UKTV Gold. It carries CBS News from America - an uninspired bulletin catering for 35-60 year olds and completely lifeless compared to Peter Jennings' enthusiastic presentation on ABC.

Plus, its owner is a neo-fascist meglomaniac whose sole intention is the eradication of fair and balanced journalism in the western world.

On point one - that N24 broadcasts a more diverse range of programmes - I would agree, and I'm sure that Reporters and so on are well produced. But I can't say I've ever been particularly fascinated by any of News 24's features. It is, at the end of the day, entirely a matter of opinion. Clearly the judges' opinions were that Sky offered a better all-round service, and was better equipped at handling rolling news. Personally, I would say it's hard to disagree on that.

The idea that Sky has no character is daft - if anything, that's what it sells itself on. News 24 is a heck of a lot more bland and uninspiring to watch. You might not like the brash character that Sky pushes, but I find it hard to believe it has no character to its output whatsoever.

Smug presenters and dodgy haircuts - again, a matter of opinion, and personally I'd prefer most of the Sky team over the News 24 one.

As for CBS/ABC - I think the channel's were being judged on their own output, rather than another news organisation's.

On the last point, I can only offer you the comfort that your ignorance means you must live a blissful existence. And nothing more.

I wonder whether the BBC's Ten O'Clock news will run the slogan of BEST NEWS PROGRAMME like they do on Breakfast (Tric)???

The Ten has decent news content to fall back on instead of just showing off awards. Something Breakfast lacks.

Yes, and it was hard to miss, it went from one side of the screen to the other.
