As long as his depth of knowledge of current affairs doesn't let him down (and that's the crux), I think Eamonn could be a very good serious news anchor.

A few of you say that he's cocky, arrogant, full of himself, but it's the sense of assurance that you need in a news anchor. You don't need someone lacking in confidence. We always criticise presenters here for umming and ahhhing during breaking news. If Eamonn is so confident - and knows his stuff - this shouldn't happen.

Time will tell.

It's not so much that, it's comments in the interview like ''I'm not doing this for Sky News, I'm doing this for me. This is great for me!'' that make him come across as a particularly unpleasant person.

''I don't give a sh!t about my employer, this is basically a publicity exercise for me'' is what he's saying.

Makes him sound like a self-centred, arrogant ****.

Presumably Eammon won't be allowed to go upstairs in the new studio. I'm not sure how much weight the balconies can take.

"I think signing me is one of the ways that Sky is trying to raise their profile" is another quote. Ugh.

From the comments on here it sounds like they're in 'basic' mode for this week, presumably because most of the work is happening with the final rehearsals in the new studio, but it also helps make what's coming next seem even better (see the last few weeks of BBC Choice).

Actually I kind of see where he is coming from..

If you worked at ASDA, for example, on £2.34 per hour, and along came Tesco and offered you £6.54 per hour for the same job, you'd move. But you wouldn't be doing it for the sake of helping Tesco, you'd be doing it because it would be a hell of alot better for you.

Well it's been a weird lineup today... Martin Popplewell and Juliet Foster on Sunrise, Andrew Wilson and Emma Crosby on Sky News Today and now Michael Wilson and Angelie Rowe doing 1-5. Should we assume all the regulars are now doing full rehearsals for next week?

I am rather pleased that Sky are not going for a BBC White/Red clincal look though.

Perhaps. But from what I've seen of the studio I have to say I'm going to buck the trend and claim to not be all that keen on it.

If I'm being harsh, I'd say it looked like a too brightly coloured (yet in other parts too dark), badly co-ordinated, tacky mess.

Nicely speaking, I'd say, well... it's a bit bigger, I suppose, and the newswall and desk are quite nice.

It could (and probably will) look a thousand times better on TV, but that's the only impression I can give at the moment.

The straps I've seen - which I know other people on here have seen too - are, in my opinion, absolutely bloody awful. As was pointed out to me this morning, whether they are the final set or not we don't know, but they are really dreadful if they're the final version. They look like the early stages of the existing designs for News 24.

Don't wish to sound overly negative, here, but just want to put a bit of perspective in. Everything I've heard is 'it's so clean, so fresh'... what I've seen looks about as ''clean'' as a dirty tramp.

EDIT: I've thought of a very good way to describe it. With the desk in the middle, and the 'blade/strip' things on the walls, it looks like the inside of a very colourful blender. That's about it.

and he's at a stage in his career where he can pick and choose the jobs he does - so in that context, saying that he's doing it for himself seems entirely justifiable.

and i'm not sure there's much doubt that Sky News were looking to raise their profile when they hired him - think back to the announcements/interviews that took place.

He was a regular on Sunrise before his ill-fated move to GMTV at its launch. If I remember correctly he joined as business editor/presenter, but when the International Business Report was dropped he moved across to presenting. When the first Gulf War took place the joke was that it was possible that when you turned onto Sky News the chances were the presentation team would consist of either Michael Wilson or Stefanie Callister.

In the new studio there is a backdrop for the roating news desk, and theres also a standalone set acompanied by a plasma, and of course a huge newswall as you all know!!

Does this 'standalone set' have a desk, or is it back to Sky News having a "aoft set" for newspaper reviews, soft news etc?

Seems pretty certain now. Sky also intend to change 70% of channel numbers as part of their updated EPG on this day and it would make sense to go for a big bang.

Can't be sure but this might mean Sky News moving from 501 ! Sky are introducing a new section for "Culture" under "Entertainment" and splitting news and documentaries. OTOH, it would probably not make a lot of commercial sense to play around with their flagship channels.

Well, having been proved wrong on this what do folk here think are the chances of the EPG changing next week alongside Sky News?

The new software with the new catagories will start going out to boxes from Monday, but the new channel numbers won't change till November, once everyone has the software.

Anyhow, Sky News is staying on 501. The other news channels are bunching up though, Bloomberg on 502, News 24 on 503 etc.

EPG categories may be reshuffled from any time next week onwards, but channel numbers are not being changed until next month.

Anyway, despite indications it was going to change to 401, it looks like Sky News is going to keep 501, although other news channels numbers will be changing (News 24 is apparently moving from 507 to 503).

Well they could have different style straps for differernt programmes, but it doesn't seem likely.

They dont seem that good, a little flat and boring. The set is busy both visually and in operation, wether thats a bad thing or not, I will wait and judge. If it is unvomfortable viewing, or noisey, then that will be a shame...
