Sky News man joins al-Jazeera

Friday September 2, 2005

Al-Jazeera International has signed up Sky News presenter David Foster.

Foster will join the team of the new English-language version of the Arab satellite news channel, which launches early next year.

AJI is understood to be trying to sign a number of big-name presenters to host segments on the channel.

Foster, who has been a journalist for 33 years, has worked for Sky News since 1997 as a news presenter and business news correspondent.

"David has a passion for news and for this channel's mission to deliver the facts without a domestic agenda," said Nigel Parsons, the managing director of al-Jazeera International.

I don't really know what to make of AJI- I suppose the best strategy is to wait and see.

If they play it straight down the middle then I think they could surprise people; I have a feeling that our perception of the network is largely made up of the Bin Laden videos and apparent "terrorist exclusives"

But taking the perspective of a new media organisation coming to London and probably attempting to ape CNN international, I'm certain the look and feel of the channel will be very Western although less so American for obvious reasons.

Perhaps they'll actually square up Sky News in their approach to big, bold breaking news, but with a much higher threshold for editing footage etc. It could therefore have an interesting impact on the UK news market.

Equally it could be marginalised in the Sky EPG and nobody will watch it. Who knows.

Personally I don't see David Foster as a great loss to Sky News.

Is that BBC presenter someone else other than Anna Jones, who was announced a month or two ago as joining Sky?

Yes.

Who's Anna Jones?

She was a BBC News 24 presenter until July. Here is the press release announcing her move to Sky News.

TV or radio presenter?

I reckon Sky would love to get their hands on one of the Five Live presenters.

Krishan Guru Murthy (sp) would be a good choice for an evening show (would attract the ''right'' demographic), but I'd be surprised if he left Channel 4.

I know it's a tiny bit off topic but before the election, SKY were saying loads about Julie Etchingham being the first female anchor of an election night programme. While on TV-ARK i noticed that Kay Burly presented in 1997!
What went on!

Kay Burley has just turned up in New Orleans.

Kay's just said that Martin Stanford is out there too.

UK Sky News.

It's like a Japanese restaurant/spaceship!!! The inside is completely round, like a fishbowl. The presenters sit in the middle. The newswall goes around the entire bottom floor.

Staircases climb up to no where. And the presenters desk revolves! (If they manage to get it right

I've read elsewhere that staircases go up to a 'soft' area with chairs and tables, etc.

I'm still baffled by the actual size of the thing. So far we've heard everything from ''it's huge!'' and ''now they've put everything in, it looks smaller'' to ''it's like a fishbowl,'' which sounds ominous.

Oh well, I guess in a couple of weeks the publicity will start coming out.

And no offence, bbcworld, but your website does say you're 17 and live in New Zealand, so forgive me if i'm confused as to how you can claim to know about it. Perhaps, just possibly, you're making it up?

All I'm saying is that all the information from people who are a) older and b) have actually seen it in person, which I assume you have not given you are on the other side of the planet, has contradicted what you said.

Your response to it does rather confirm my thoughts about you.
