Here's an idea for the top of the hour sequence.
Over on Sky Travel at random hours (which can change from day to day even with the same programmes in the same time slots) they go around the world using Earth TV's 90 second The World Live tour (ditto BBC World).
Maybe this could be the answer.
A quick look around the planet for 90 seconds every hour, which can also be dropped when big stories break. The World Live ends at 59:30, so you still have 30 seconds to promo the next hours and still hit the 00:00 junction for the TOH ident.
Get this sponsored and the considerations of dropping 90' worth of ads would be greatly reduced.
Just a thought.

I imagine the reason is that other than for us TV pres anoraks, they make for rather boring telly... plus most of the time on a news channel, you've already got a fair idea as to what's coming up, ie. the news.
That's not to say I wouldn't like to see them return.

News channels seem to have ditched TOTH menus for some inexplicable reason, which were useful to see what was coming up.

You wouldn't really get any extra time for ads, though, would you? The break would just start a little later.
What do you think about the Fox News way? Rather than ending the hour and going to ads, instead coming back from the break at :59 past and handing over to the next anchor.

And lose 30 seconds of advertising revenue? I doubt it.
If they do anything, it'll be to cut down the time even further i'd expect. I.e. have the ident run at .00 rather than .59.50, so they get an extra ten seconds of ad space.

Kinda off topic, but I seen this on the RFTS site,

and I'm wondering about how long did SKY remain using the 1998 look with the newswall in the studio?

That was from when the studio was launched on screen (September 2001), to when the new look graphics package was first used (which I think was October 2001)

It was around that time.
I am sure that I am correct in saying that this, the current, Sky News set was under construction at the time of Sept 11th and then the obvious upcoming military operation in Afghanistan; so they brought forward the move into the set as soon as possible. Which explains the "War on Terror" on the brand new video wall.
It is quite strange to see how basic that studio was when they first moved in.
I also remember around this time watching Sky News Sunrise simulcasting on Fox News and them getting loads of emails from those crazy yanks emailing how much they love seeing Sky News.

Yep, the move to the current set was rushed forward in the wake of September 11.
I was abroad at the time so welcomed the chance to watch Sky News Sunrise on Fox, you're right they had people emailing asking to explain Cricket and the like (those 10min sports roundups every hour must have confused them - on a news channel!) although eventually Fox cut away whenever the sport came on.
