I wouldn't be surprised if Sky manages to incorporate a lot of the things the BBC ditched when they went 3D such as isobars and pretty symbols, just as a bit of a two-fingers to the Beeb.
I'm assuming, though may be entirely wrong, that Sky will go for an all VR weather map, with a presenter actually walking across the map of the UK and being 'amongst' the weather. As I say, just an assumption, but I know the new news centre was supposed have a big VR area in it for such presentations.
Either way, nice to hear it confirmed that they're ditching the existing look!
But that wouldn't work surely? the only way it would look decent would be if it had an overhead shot - which doesn't seem likely. If it didn't though, it would mean the map would have to be tilted - which caused the most complaints about BBC's weather. I'm not sure where this rumour about VR weather came from but I don't think it's true.

If you read my post, it says JUST AN ASSUMPTION. It's not a rumour at all.
The map would have to be tilted, but the way I was thinking of it would be that it would be possible for a camera to track a presenter walking around the map, thereby allowing them to walk up to any part of the UK, so the issue re: can't see Scotland from down here, mate, wouldn't arise because the presenter would be able to walk up to Scotland, stand amongst falling rain etc, and the camera would follow them up there.
Whether the technology is around to do that sufficiently and with clarity is another question entirely. But it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see someone doing it in the next decade or so, if not sooner.
Now that was an interesting use of the studio - Chris talking to a weather presenter, in front of the pod, about what the weather's going to be like for the Ashes. As they came out of the weather graphics, Kay and the sports presenter could be seen on the other side of the pod; Chris threw over to them, and they chatted about the sport.
It
almost
worked - the far side of the pod is too hard to get a decent camera shot of, and a bit too dark, but I think it's that kind of segment which would have worked well on a sofa in a soft area.
