Bit disappointed with the "new" Sky World News. Recorded it and decided to check it out - seemed nothing more than a couple more world stories than usual and a very strange programme format.

It featured the Showbiz news from Sky News Active and a recorded "Your View" section which was just Michael Watkins reading out some emails. Though we're being invited to record ourselves on webcams and videophones and email them in. Should be entertaining.

Business was a big let down - about two stories and the final figures. Weather was a welcome addition, as was seemingly a proper world sports roundup - though it's only a minute long and I'd never seen the bloke who was doing it before.

My verdict - could do better....glad they've beefed it up a bit but it's not that different to before, bar the fact they've thrown in a few bits to make it seem better.

Does seem a tad bizarre to do a load of new stings and launch a new programme when presumably they're all going to have to be changed in 12 weeks' time.

At least I bloody well hope they are. The new graphics better not resemble what's been captured there.

I did think that this strand of programming would be used to try out 'new talent' for the new look in September and I guess I may well be right yet. I do get the impression that this wasn't supposed to have happened just yet. Could be contractual reasons why they are having to do an world themed couple of hours?

Perhaps was already planned to go ahead (maybe in relation to the relaunch which would have been happening around now...) or maybe they're losing out to the BBC so wanted a quick solution to try and pick up some viewers into Sunrise.

Is this new information ?

Quote:
Sky News is planning to launch a nightly current affairs show to rival NewsNight, according to a report in The Scotsman at the weekend.

The new programme is part of the broadcaster's shift of strategy towards a US-style personality-led lineup. Veteran breakfast presenter Eamonn Holmes is joining the network this Autumn to host a revamped Sunrise while Jeremy Thompson has already been earmarked for the 7pm slot.

The channel is thought to have approached "a number of journalists" for the late-night show but has refused to comment on the story. "We are not in a position to announce anything at this stage," said a spokesman. "Whether any new programme will be seen as an equivalent to Newsnight will really be up to viewers to judge. I can't really say any more than that."

An hour-long show of similar ilk, The Boulton Factor, was a huge success for the station during the recent general election campaign. The host, Sky's political editor Adam Boulton, would be a strong contender to front the new programme but other presenters, such as Kay Burley, are also being considered.

I really cannot imagine that Burley is being considered. Whilst she is a good presenter, I think the last sort of programme she'd be suited to would be a Newsnight stylee. Her reports on the Olympic bid, and presenting from Singapore, have been outstanding though. Anyway, she's already got a show.

I don't think it is a great shocker. They have, by my reckoning, still another 3 or 4 evening ''shows'' to announce. The 7-12 timeslots are bound to be filled with this sort of programming, and so no doubt the raids on rivals will continue right up until launch.

With the greatest respect to them, I'd be very surprised if they were able to produce anything on the scale of Newsnight, if only for financial reasons. Newsnight costs a fortune to make, far more than other news programmes, and although Sky's programming budget has undoubtedly increased it hasn't increased that much. Either way, will be good to have something like that in the schedule; the Boulton Factor is undoubtedly part of the inspiration for it.

That article also says that Jeremy Thompson will anchor the 7pm show to go head to head with C4 News, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Julie Etchingham had been allocated that slot - unless they have now switched Julie to do the new Live at Five show?
