Of course, the alternative would be to build a new larger facility - almost like a warehouse or hangar - put a couple of different presentation positions around the place, maybe with a big screen somewhere, add some microphones in key locations and then shove the desks in there too. Almost like a working newsroom. If only they'd tried that sort of thing before...

Does this not have implications in terms of protecting sources and embargos? Not to mention bad language etc.

This is very much the idea - to show the inner workings of the newsroom. Of course, there may be delicate matters discussed in private.
