So is this the first time they've used the old studios since the election?

Not quite sure why a studio only in use for a year now needs so much work it's out of action for weeks - I'd have thought most of the work to improve the backdrop would actually take place outside the glass box (they've already added a few bursts of colour), so I'm guessing there is bit of technical work going on too.

As for the old studio - if they're trying to replicate shots from the glass box in front of the newswall then they'd have been better off taking the desk across as well. That said this just proves how oversized that laptop screen is - still don't understand why they replaced the old newswall with it.

A lot of technical work. Our current gallery (and the entire building) is shutting down, so we have some technical preparations to make before moving to the new building where we will be automated.

Going automated clearly explains why they would want to shut down the cube. There’s probably weeks of technical trials and rehearsals.

So the new studio won't have the newsroom in background? That's a shame.

There will be a newsroom background - but it won’t necessarily be real

i don’t understand so this old studio started in 2005 which replaced the original that started in 1989 what happened to the original 1989 studio? and now we are in the glass box, so I am guessing in the history of Sky News this is the third studio?

This is an image from the report they ran about the move. This first studio was a bit grotty (IMO) and they moved into a converted Tesco warehouse I think it was. Then I believe Sky Sports News moved into the old Sky News building.

Now that Harlequin 1, and the Sky Central have been built, it makes sense to move all operations and studios together, so that is why Sky News will be moving again, and making use of both the Glass Box, and another studio.

Is that video about the 2005 move online anywhere?

Today was the best afternoon coverage I've seen on Sky for a long time from a presentation point of view.

Extensive use of the shoebox for all in-studio guests and proper use of the studio, it was almost like old times.

There were lots more positions used but the above gives you an idea.

Kay has mentioned a big announcement tomorrow a couple of times on her Instagram story. Any guesses?

Has there been any announcement?

That looks so good and reminds me of Afternoon Live of old.

Did they do any presentation from the stairs or balcony?
I appreciate the appointment to view slots in 2005 were part of the reason why Sky News' audience haemorrhaged at the time, but the channel's presentation was first class and nothing's come close. It's just a shame in 2011 they decided to become desk bound with the wheel of news and the life was literally sucked out of the channel.

Both Sky News and the BBC News channel need to look like channels built in 2017, clinging to old habits and not modernising their presentation for a younger audience coming through will be the death of the channels, especially as those audiences are increasingly getting their news from online sources or apps, which we all know can lead to rather warped stories from dubious unconfirmed sources hitting people's smartphones. I was saying this in 2010 and was shot down on these forums when the channels became nothing more than static camera shots constantly. It's nice to see both channels embracing change which won't see their existing audience turn away as such, but entice new younger viewers in who will remain loyal for years to come.

Nothing from the Balcony or the stairs, but quite a few other views of the studio apart from the red and blue old newsroom backdrop because the desk can no longer rotate which is a shame since it would have been more suitable for the desk presented segments she did.

The interviews by Kay today looked far more relaxed and even the guests seemed a little more relaxed than normal but it's hard to know if that was just down to people rather than the studio, we'll see over the coming days for sure.

You can see a full interview segment from the shoebox here:

The sound was noticeably better from the studio for Kay's program today as well, although there is occasionally background noise heard because of the staff being closer to the set than before the election.

Going by the caps alone, I think it's important that while Kay herself is excellent at the softer segments on her show, having a soft area does add something to it, which has been lost while in the glass box.

Press Preview is harder to readjust to the sofas, but I'd like to hope the new studio has a soft area for 3-6.30 and PP.
