Right. So I guess my question is, is the space that we see used for Sky News, or is it used for other Sky departments? From the looks of it, the main shot out of the cube almost looks more like a big reception space rather than a working newsroom.
It's other general Sky departments, and the floor outside is effectively a big reception/concourse area for the building
Sunrise is a big improvement on other programs, simply using the screen as a background more often compared to the distracting backgrounds and annoying staircase makes a big difference.
The white use of backgrounds in Millbank is getting annoying though, again we've seen Darren McCaffery with a usual Millbank background and 5 mins later he's in front of a white one after a clip, why the constant switching around, it's been happening non stop the last few days, I don't understand the randomness of it?
What's the story with the wonky straps for the weather? The map looks a bit....misshaped too?
The new studio has a bit more depth than I first thought. Sunrise (when it's not using the screen as a backdrop) has the desk angled towards the staff kitchen area; 11-3 uses the entrance with the huge windows showing people coming to work; Kay has the busy/informal steps showing people walking about before turning the desk towards the offices for the 'Live at Five' replacement.
Also, IsleofIreland - the weather straps appear misshaped as the camera is coming from the side of the map, when the desk has SJM & JS using the screen as a backdrop.
So wouldn't a far better solution be to apply the straps onto the screen post production rather than on the big screen itself to prevent that?
Well that's what I would have thought - there must be a reason why they haven't. Incidentally, when the desk was turned around, they showed the map straight on but looking down and it looked wrong

I liked the shot from outside the box as they went to the break before the TOTH at 1pm as all the ants came flooding in - 8 in total
The whole standing up, sitting down randomly and constantly moving the desk throughout the programme is a bit odd
I'm not a fan of the desk so low down or the chairs
I actually like the new studio and agree it has made the old one look pretty dated. I do think it looks a bit bare however, but this could be easily fixed by adding some screens for the background shots as someone mocked up above. Something like the screens in the background of the BBC shots would go a long way to help this.
Also a question: does the desk move anywhere on the floor or can it only spin around from a fixed position in the floor?
Personally, I don´t understand how Sky News Centre which has been looking (to me at least) futuristic over the past years, can suddenly look "dated" as you say and a new studio which has mainly beige wood and yellow ochre greenish sofas (70´s style) inside, can suddenly look fresh and modern?
