Very disappointed with Sky news today as they decided to cut away from the survivors stories from Auschwitz to tell us for the millionth time about the sky news projection for the election in 100 days - could it not have waited for 1 hour? - They have the rest of the day to go on about that. Now they are showing the sport whilst BBC shows emotional survivor.

BBC News showing it in full which is the right decision in my opinion

Sad news today that Tim Marshall, diplomatic editor and formerly foreign affairs editor is leaving Sky News. He had been on a period of leave of absence and was due to return in early January but will not do so now. Tim for me has been one of the most exceptional correspondents I have ever seen and he will be sorely missed. I have too many memories of Tim reporting throughout the years to mention in a single post but if 30 seconds can sum up his professionalism and quality as a journalist it is his tribute to his close friend Mick Deane live on air shortly after his death was announced - a moment that will live with me for a long time. I wish Tim the very best in his future endeavours. I'll miss you on Sky.

From The Guardian: Sky News to merge digital and TV staff in newsroom shakeup

Quote:
Sky News is planning to integrate its digital and television operations in a “fundamental transformation” of its newsroom.

Staff have been shown the proposed new structure and around 30 roles are affected by the changes.

Sky has opened up a consultation period, due to end in March, for staff to make suggestions but has said that it hopes overall headcount will not reduce and staff will be able to transfer to the new roles.

However it is understood that those who do not or are not able to make the move could then be eligible for redundancy.

The suggested structure could be in place by the summer and affects posts across the board.

It is thought to be aimed at breaking down the barriers between digital and television and putting more emphasis on online.

A Sky News spokesman denied the plans were about cutting costs: “Sky News is reorganising its newsroom to fully prepare for its future in a fast changing industry. We believe the changes proposed will fundamentally transform our newsroom so we can continue to be a leading news organisation in a digital world.”

Sky’s move comes as BBC News looks at how it and the industry will adapt to the changes in the ways news is viewed and gathered in its report The Future of News.

Browsing Behance earlier, I came across a portfolio which was related to when Sky News updated its logo. There were a few interesting images, including pitches for a TOTH ident including red fins as opposed to the blue/navy that we see on TV.

But something else caught my eye - 'logo idents' which seemed very similar to Sky Sports' idents. I wonder if these were going to be used in and out of breaks? I hate how Sky just crash into or out of advertisements so these would've been great - Sky News Arabia has some brilliant idents IIRC.

Here's an image of the example on Behance - shame they were never used...

TVF-ers might be interested to know that, as of today, you can now watch the entire inaugural bulletin from Sky News - presented by Penny Smith and Alastair Yates on Feb 5th, 1989 - on our Catch-Up service. (It's the very first entry in the "Vault" section and will be there permanently)

Is this going to be made available on the Now TV/Roku box app too?

I'll have to look into that, but it's certainly widely-available on YouTube, both through Sky's official channel and that of Alastair Yates.
