Pretty sure Martin was using an iPad on Election night and was using it to control graphics on the Newswall. I believe the iPad belongs to Sky News and is not Martin's own.

I don't think he was using the ipad to control the newswall though. If you look at the pictures on TV Newsroom (particularly this one http://tvnewsroom.co.uk/wp-content/section-images/election-night-2010-sky-news/TVNR-2010-05-07-00h13m25s51.jpg) I'm sure that's just the standard tablet/laptop they normally use?

BBC Radio Cumbria have been much faster at breaking the news than Sky. They announced that the suspect had dumped his car in Boot before 1pm. Sky didn't announce this or show the picture issued by the police until after 1.

This is one of the biggest stories of the year.

Still no Sky staff member on the scene.

Sky reporting ten fatalities.

I had a listen to BBC Cumbria and they were playing music! It is no good the police telling people not to pick up hitchhikers on television when the local radio is playing music. I am sure they have mentioned this news story but why play music at a time like this?

Kay Burley on Sky News now. Things can only get.....

Edit: Off topic but wow!

The music has been interupted to break the news as it happens. There's no point having a presenter waffle speculation when you can wait and get the facts. Five Live has been good too, they managed to speak to one of the doctors who confirmed two deaths in one of the towns.

Sky struggling a bit in terms of pictures etc. but their person on the ground, who is a producer I think, has been very good.

Merely hamstrung by the lack of any nearby satellite trucks - whereas the BBC could easily bring one over from Newcastle.

What else are they meant to do? They don't have the resources or staff to roll continuously with news, unless they sit there and endlessly repeat themselves even when there's no new news. They are however giving clear concise information every couple of minutes between records; the tone of which is appropriate for the circumstances.

The other reason to play music is so that when it's playing they can collect any new information ready for the next link. They'll only have a presenter, producer and a couple of broadcast journalists there, not the staffing or resources level that a TV news channel would have... and there's little actuality to play to fill either

When the floods (both lots) were happening they did very much the same thing.... it's a good little station Radio Cumbria

When the floods were happening a few months ago there was a lot of praise for Sky News' coverage, they were in the right place at the right time. It's very different this time though, Sky are struggling

Not as bad luck as ITV though - this is the second big story in Cumbria since they closed down Border TV! Rolling Eyes
