The obvious reason is a commercial one. If people read about Sky News HD having nicer graphics then it is another selling point. It would be nice to have 16:9 graphics on SD though.

Am I right in thinking they even use some of the old font on the SD election graphics?

The ticker is a little small and difficult to read. I guess I am used to the larger SD ticker.
