BSkyB is streamlining its Sky News sports operation in a move to share more output with Sky Sports News.

The change is understood to affect the presenting duties of Sky News veterans including Chris Skudder, who has covered the Olympics and last four World Cups, Nick Powell, and cricket specialist Charlie Thomas. The restructure is also understood to affect the position of Sky News sports editor Lee Wellings.

BSkyB would not provide details about who was affected by the restructure. But a Sky spokesman said that all employees affected would be offered new roles.

The restructure of the Sky News sports team follows the decision earlier this month to drop its own sports bulletins in favour of taking a feed from Sky Sports News. As a result BSkyB has decided to "introduce greater editorial co-operation" between its two sports news operations in a move that will see four roles made redundant.

Wonder when this will go live, as Sky Sports News is currently in SD - will they wait for them to go HD?

About time Sky realised they had a Sports News Channel. They could provide a quick 3min bulletin for Sky News to show each hour, including a "For more news from your favourite sports, watch Sky Sports News HD on channel 4XX"

Hmm no mention of Jon Desborough. Interesting to see what they have in mind.

No mention of Jacquie Beltrao either. I can't imagine they'd consider breaking up the Eamonn/Charlotte/Jacquie combo.

Will be interesting to see how Sky Sports News deal with this, as Sky News always used to show highlights from Premiership games currently underway with the "pictures from Sky Sports 1" fair usage caption on. Same goes for stuff like clips the F1 on the BBC. Sky Sports News doesn't do this at all, especially from other channels (and in the case of stuff like their own Premiership coverage, having to wait until midnight).

Is Sky Sports News still expected to go HD in time for the new football season to kick off in August?

I am peeved about this, I really am. Sky Sports News is not as broad as Sky News sports news and it's much better for Sky News to have its own sports team.

Was HD really worth it now they are having to make all this cost cutting elsewhere? I don't think so.

I’m thinking it could be the case that Chris Skudder, Nick Powell and Charlie Thomas will just be doing some shifts, ostensibly on Sky Sports News, that will be broadcast on both channels.

I'd say that Sky News actually have the superior sports presenters to Sky Sports News so perhaps SSN want to build on that.

It seems odd that they would keep Jacqui and not Charlie since they both provide the sport during Sunrise.

Perhaps this means Jon is moving to weekend Sunrise and the rest of the day's sports bulletins will be provided by Sky Sports News and a mixture of presenters, old and new.

Sunrise seems to be good at the moment, so as someone said previously probably not a good idea to break them up, but also perhaps because Sky Sports News doesn't start as early as Sunrise and therefore there would be no one in place for a 'update' or what ever it will be called.

Sky is to integrate its Sky Sports News brand more closely into the Sky News channel to boost efficiencies.

The changes, which will see Sky Sports News tied more closely into the News channel in place of its existing sports coverage, is designed to leverage the strength of the dedicated sports news channel’s brand.

Editorially the move is also designed to tackle unnecessary duplication such as sending two separate crews to cover events although both operations will continue to require their own resource.

A small number of roles have been affected by the decision but staff have been offered the opportunity to apply for new roles created as a result of the changes.

A Sky spokesperson said the changes were designed to improve the service.

“To deliver an even better service for viewers, who recognise Sky Sports as a leader in sports broadcasting, Sky News has introduced greater editorial co-operation with Sky Sports News, including on-screen presence,” he said.

“As part of this change four new roles have been created, which will be offered to those whose current positions will become redundant. No changes to overall levels of headcount are expected across the sports team.”

While I understand some people's concerns, the move makes sense to me. The Sky Sports brand is a very strong one and it makes sense for Sky News to tap into that, although no doubt the cost efficiencies are the driving factor. In terms of the different editorial policies between the two channels I don't believe that the bulletins will be lifted straight from SSN, they will be tailored for Sky News.

With Sky Sports News going HD very shortly, most likely August/September along with a move to a new studio facility early in the new year I think the new bulletins will work well. I am of the view that at times there is too much sport on Sky News. Obviously at the weekend when Sky News show some sporting action that is not on SSN some people may tune to Sky News but many people turn to SSN for big breaking sports stories, not Sky News, because they cover it in more depth. This move should allow for more focus on news at the Sky News Centre, leaving the sport to SSN.
