I don't know what you mean by logistical problems, this idea (real set & VR set) has been used on a smaller scale across the world, such as Global TV in Canada.
I think it would have been a better idea to replace the old videowall with a VR area, much like the area in the BBC's Election 2010 studio. It would give them more flexibility, because a) it gives opportunities for various set extensions b) it allows different sets to be used for different shows c) allows Martin (or whoever) to use the area more flexibly for elections/events d) it can be used to show maps/models relating to stories.
