the split screens seem to be ones that are kind of a hybrid between the original ones and the ones used for the Thatcher Funeral as the screens go all the way down to the red headline. They are then overlaying the graphics at the bottom of it on one side and no graphic on the other.
Normally there would be a strip under the split screens and if only one side was being used a label one would have text and the other side plain white.
The newer option they're using at the moment is definitely better. Sometimes it's confusing when there's blank/plan white on one side, especially if the shots are from the same location.
Quick question, when a big Breaking story happens which involves adverts/breaks being cancelled and continuous rolling coverage of an event. Who makes the decision? Is it the producer/director on duty or from further up the chain?
I've only ever known a couple of times when they've suspended ad breaks (9/11 and 7/7 come to mind).
I would guess the overall channel editor makes the call - both in terms of dropping adverts, and to the commercial play out area to tell the guys to hold the breaks for the time being.

Yeah it will be whoever is editor of the channel at the time. In terms of the breaks themselves yes they have to tell playout to drop the breaks. AIUI the break before the top of the hour is a fixed permanent event which the news studio have to hit exactly, but the others are flexible and playout are cued from the gallery and manually run. Therefore it's only really an issue at 57 something past the hour.
It does happen at lot, and not just for big events, long press conferences being a good example.
Not a fan of the new ones. They look empty. And I preferred the old side panels, contained more information which was easier to read. And I don't like the bold fond of the days either, the old graphics sie (the same size as the live place information) were just fine.
They don't seemed to have changed the weather graphics in the run up to the top of the hour on the international version.
Agree with what has been said about the new day/time graphic, no need for it to be that big and the new side panel looks reminds me of the Windows Metro look a little..... scrap that just seen it again and it doesn't look Metro like at all!
Interesting deal between Sky and Yahoo to create a new online hub for Sunrise, similar to a deal between ABC and Yahoo for Good Morning America (albeit on a smaller scale).
Deal also includes launch on new web show 'Thinking Aloud' with Joey Jones and 'Loose Change' with Poppy Trowbridge.
Also the first I've heard of Nick Herm being the chief operating officer at Sky News - a recent appointment?
Press release below,
Quote:
Yahoo! and Sky News have signed a partnership that extends Sky News video content, currently enjoyed by over 107 million homes across 118 countries around the world to Yahoo! News’ 6.5m online users in the UK and potentially millions more worldwide.
The partnership will see the launch of an online hub, exclusively on Yahoo! for Sunrise - Sky’s flagship morning news show presented by Eamonn Holmes and Charlotte Hawkins. Plus three original co-commissioned series covering Politics, Tech and Business and a window to the Sky News live feed during breaking news events.
The three original shows are: Thinking Aloud, a Current Affairs Debate hosted by Joey Jones, Loose Change, a Personal Finance programme presented by Poppy Trowbridge and Ursula Errington and The Lab, series of short films on UK’s brightest young inventors.
The Sky News Sunrise hub will be hosted on Yahoo! News UK with its content and the original series available on demand to Yahoo! users globally.
Sky News is already an important news feed on Yahoo! and our users respond well to Sky News stories. Now Yahoo!’s scale and technology means more people can enjoy quality Sky News content.
