I'm guessing the side panels are HD-exclusive?

Correct.

Any flashes expected?

HD Subscribers pay their £10 extra a month for a reason you know...

They had an HD report from Russia yesterday and don't forget, unlike the SD version, Sky News HD is a pay channel, so they'll have more to spend than other brodcasters.

Getting HD back from somewhere like Russia isn't impossible of course, there are any number of ways via file transfer... but they aren't quick. It's normally only OK for packages that aren't that urgent, the problem is when they need live shots or material sent back straight away

I'm not sure how much extra income will come from subscribers, no-one pays separately for Sky News HD

I reckon he'll flash on the steps of Downing Street.

When was the last time you saw a newsflash?

As your username acknowledges, news breaks these days it doesn't flash!

It's a shame the Skycopter's camera isn't in HD yet - it would make such a difference considering some of the shots they get.

Bit more tricky to downlink an HD camera, isn't it?

Well it used to be anyway.

Downlinking in HD isn't a problem these days, both Gigawave & LINK have sufficiently small & lightweight HD microwave transmitters suitable for helicopter use, and HD gyrostabilised cameras have been around for a while (we had one of the first in Athens in 2004). As Inspector Sands says though, getting your HD pictures back to the Sky Centre is more tricky, as it requires all the infrastructure between your receive point (I'm guessing it will be a permanent position on the roof of a building in central London for these pictures) and the Sky Centre to have been upgraded to carry the HD pictures (just look at the BBC's Millbank studio still being stuck on analogue PAL). I would imagine this will happen eventually, but it will have been quite low on the list of jobs to get the HD channel launched.

Jeff Randall really has no place commenting on Brown's resignation, he does Sky no favours whatsoever.

Jeff Randall fear mongering about a Lib/Lab pact.

He's becoming less and less credible.

Was just about to say the same thing. I wouldn't say Sky News is biased as a whole, but Jeff Randall really, really is. It'd be OK if he was a guest or a contributor, but saying those things as a Sky News presenter badly damages the crediblility of the channel.

The actual downlinking of helicopters for the BBC years ago used to involve someone on the East Tower pointing an aerial/dish in the direction of the helicopter. If he got it wrong it would break up. I suspect it's a lot easier and more reliable these days, you can have several omni-directional receive points spread out and combining their (COFDM) signals together.

I wonder what their external lines situation is like? BT is still SD only as far as I know, there are alternatives that will provide HD but they aren't as universal as a BT line.
