It's a shame the Skycopter's camera isn't in HD yet - it would make such a difference considering some of the shots they get.

Bit more tricky to downlink an HD camera, isn't it?

Well it used to be anyway.

JT presenting Live at 5 from Westminster presumably, just seen him in the background at Millbank.

For what it's worth Kay Burley has been very good this afternoon, no antics just good presenting, good guests and fair questions.

Downlinking reliable SD video from a helicopter wasn't exactly easy until recently! Looking at Mike Smith's 'Flying TV' it looks like they've done HD from their copters (they've had HD cameras and record facilities for a while now). BTW, is the 'Skycopter' actually theirs or do they hire one in when they need it?

The problem with doing news in HD is that it's fairly easy when using your own facilities at base or in pre-planned locations. However getting pictures from the field back to base in HD is still an issue. I assume Sky have upgraded at least some of their sat trucks (which they use in the UK) but turning up at a sat truck or feed point elsewhere in the world and hoping to feed back HD just isn't going to be possible for a while. Even from the UK the cost and capacity limitations of the extra space on the SNG satellites might be too much to do it regularly

Kay seems to have had a change of heart today, not too much belittling, and a nice dose of anti-tory as well as anti-Labour tone from her.

And her interview with Lord Baker now illustrating that accusations of bias are far fetched and inaccurate.

Agreed. She’s just been asking some decent and reasonably tough questions focusing on the Tories losing their 20 point lead in the polls but I’m sure that sone of the usual suspects won't dwell on this as it doesn’t fit the belief that she and Sky are pro-Tory. Wink

Edit: beaten to it!

They had an HD report from Russia yesterday and don't forget, unlike the SD version, Sky News HD is a pay channel, so they'll have more to spend than other brodcasters.

Who is this woman presenting Afternoon Live and what has she done with Kay Burley?

Is it a pay channel though - surely part of the HD package, which you pay for. Do we know if Sky actually gives the News department substantially more now it's in HD?

I suspect it is possible that some of the money for the launch came from BSkyB's HD budget rather than the Sky News budget.

I'm guessing the side panels are HD-exclusive?
