this constant sound failure makes me mad. When they know that they have such problemes, why do the presenters immediately begin to talk after returning from break, instead of waiting 2 seconds until we can hear everything?

Is this on Sky News HD? Complete speculation, but it might be your audio gear being switched between PCM/DD? That often introduces a momentary gap on my amp...

I don't think it's the "gear" as also on my ipod and the laptop the sound happens so it cant be my tv and ipod and laptop with the problem

It is the channel that has the problems. Even the TOTH has the sound problems. Sky News, Sky News Ireland and Sky News International are all affected with only the HD working properly.

Probably another method to force the viewers watching skynews hd? A shame that they are neglecting all the other skynews channels. They are focusing too much on the hd channel. I can understand when they make lots of adverts to present their new hd channel but not 18 months after it launched

*Unrelated*** What does sky news store their videos on, e.g.. interviews....conferences as they always refer back to things and I guess theyd need LOTS of storage space...?

Is Sky having a Christmas newswall background like in the past or have they given up on this too, just like many other good things. I especially loved the one used immediately after the 2005 relunch.

They sadly have given up this too! Like too many other great things

I can't imagine a Christmas newswall would fit in with the serious news channel objective. It's hardly a tragedy anyway.

HUGE servers, and lots of them. It's important for news channels to keep their archive complete and close to hand, e.g. today's Kim Jong Il's news would have come out of the blue, and as a rolling news service where the priority is to break news, they would have needed archive GVs of him quick!

I'd expect them to be making use of SAN's (Storage Area Networks). As the name suggests all all these do is deal with storage - hugly scalable, fast access and full redundancy.

Keeping all that data is almost the easy part. Indexing it in some meaningful way would be the difficult bit. Maybe they store the subtitles too so they can be used to search against. Does anyone know more about how they do this?
