Using this 3 paper reviewer format seems to be working very well. Maybe something to consider on a more permanent basis?

The Sky News spin off appears to be dead in the water - News Corporation has withdrawn all its undertakings given to the government, i.e the commitment to spin off Sky News. Effectively meaning they want the bid referred to the Competition Commission.

And that's part of a wider plan to keep the bid alive - they don't want Jeremy Hunt to give in to pressure and just say that the deal shouldn't go ahead. That means the Competition Commission then will take an independent look and it could take up to a year for any deal to go through - hopefully for them - long after the scandal has gone away.

Anyway, I apologise for hijacking the thread - perhaps you'd like to join me for a shameless plug and further discussion over on Metropol?

So, in plain speak, the Competition Commission can either approve or deny News Corporation taking full control of BSkyB (including Sky News) now. If I'm understanding this correctly, and if the deal was approved, isn't that likely to make Sky News less independent than it would have been if spun-off? Still getting my head round it.

If News Corp complete the takeover of BSkyB as decided by the Competition Commission then it will mean that Rupert Murdoch will have full control of Sky including Sky News. However, the Competition Commission may recommend that Sky News should not be part of the takeover and it could still be spun off.

Spinning off Sky News doesn't really make sense as it's a loss making entity and is unlikely it would continue in its current form if owned by another organisation. However, I'm not sure that many people are keen on News Corp having full control of the channel which could align it even more with the view of its newspapers.

Which is a shame as I prefer Sky News to BBC News and Al Jazeera

Well... if the bid gets turned down in entirety, I guess things stay would the same at Sky News as they have been until Murdoch decides whether he wants to keep those 39% of shares.

I'm not sure if anyone's ever answered this question fully - but if News International are deemed not to be 'fit and proper' owners of a broadcasting licence - will they have to give up their EXISTING share in B-Sky-B?

Bit more detail from Broadcast about the feelings inside Sky and more specifically Sky News,
Quote:
At Sky News the mood was described as “stoic” with its future widely considered to be safe despite of the eventual outcome.

It is fascinating to watch the live Sky News interview between Kay Burley and Chris Bryant who is demanding an apology from her. I thought the whole saga was over but this MP keeps moaning about what happened several months ago. I like the way Kay Burley is keeping her cool, people might not rate her however, she is a good anchor IMO irrespective of what people think (although everybody is entitled to their own opinion) Laughing
