Is Sky not just using the News channel as a form of press statement now? They've interrupted Jeff Randall Live for a resignation which is hardly news, which frankly isn't worth the amount of airtime Sky News is giving to the story.

Also, Adam Boulton looks like he's just got out of bed on JRL now.

Great discussion on Jeff Randall Live about the proposed News Corp takeover of Sky and the speculation that surrounds the future of Sky News.

Damn! missed it. What was said around the future of Sky News?

I didn't see it, but I guess it'd be the two options being bandied around - either Sky News is sold or (more likely) an independent editorial board is set up, similar to what they have on The Times.

Yes they discussed the possibility of an independent editorial board and Claire Enders also raised the possibility of having Sky News operate as a trust that would be financed through BSkyB effectively paying Sky News for a 10 year news contract. Apologies it's not the best explanation of what was said but hopefully they will upload it on the website.

Just catching up with the thread. Cheers for the summary both Smile

They have got the Skystrator out today for the Egypt crisis

the Egypt crisis

Anyone else feel that the significance of this story to the UK is not sufficient for the amount of coverage Sky has given it today? Wouldn't mind but they are looping the same pictures, speaking to the same correspondents...

I think the story is definitely worthy of the time they are giving it (think I am right in saying it is the only story covered since lunchtime) and while it would be nice if there was a greater variety of pictures I suspect there are all sorts of difficulties in getting pictures out of the region (although admittedly AJE have managed to broadcast some extraordinary live images).

Sky still rolling with the Egypt story, dare I even suggest 'Sky News of old type' rolling coverage.

According to the producer on Twitter, Tim Marshall will present Sky News at 10 from Cairo.

Indeed, I was just thinking that this is just the sort of thing that Sky does really well, and hasn't done for some time.

Jo did the weather from the newswall this morning

Sky News came back at 13:57 and we heard Matt Smith say "oh for god sake" and "where are we going?" before coming on air and going to Manchester with breaking news on the student protesters

Just watched it back and the conversation was on the lines of

Guy: Matt, Matt, can you plug in?
Matt: Why?, why?, what?, we also hear a woman say we're chatting
Guy: We're coming to you Matt
Matt: They've got the ident havent they?, 2 minutes to the ident isn't it?
Guy: They want to put you in vision ASAP
Matt: Oh for god sake

then silence

Matt: Where we going?, where is he?, Manchester?, yeah

Back in vision

I noticed someone mentioned on the AJE thread how they were good yesterday especially in terms of the live pictures they were showing. Yesterday, Sky & the BBC were mainly relying on the State TV images or pre-recorded material.

Sky seem to have got round that today though, a few minutes ago they were showing Al Arabiya which is showing live images from Cairo.

Oh my. Did anyone capture it?

Who does Matt Smith think he is talking like that? He's lucky to have the job that he has because he's a terrible news reader. No gravitas or presence at all.
